RAAL Out or IN?
« on: 28 Dec 2013, 05:53 pm »
Just curious how you guys setup your speakers… RAAL on the outer edge or more on the inside?  For some who are confused, the RAAL is offset and can be placed in either configuration.  So, how do you guys set them up and what results do you get?  Thanks!

Mike

Mike, hi.  I don't have these speakers nor are my tweeters offset, but my best guess is that with the tweeters on the inside you will have a more natural stage.  That is to say what is in the recording will be more faithfully reproduced in your room.

I have my SS M7s set up with the RAALs at the inner edge. However, I find no difference either way. To be candid, the offset is so small the true difference in the angle of your listening position relative to the acoustic axis of the drivers is so minute it isn't worth fretting about. Also to be candid, positioning relative to the boundaries of your room and toe-in (to a lesser extent) are both much more important. I've experimented quite a bit with toe-in in particular, but only because I live in an apartment with a smaller listening space than many who live in houses. So I tend to listen (critically) at a shorter distance. Which is why toe-in is worth the work of fine-tuning in my case.

Just my opinion ... from experience with my M7s in my specific listening environment.

Interesting. I figured this would be a landslide, and the first two votes and comments go the opposite direction.

Go into any showroom or any show and the tweeters are to the outside. I listen to my LS 6s exclusively with tweeters to the outside as well as every other speaker I've owned with offset tweeters.

Most instruments and all vocals are below the frequency range of almost all tweeters. For better focus of instruments and vocals, midrange to the center, tweeters to the outside for more "air" and "ambiance" is what I've always heard and believed.

Hi Mike! I'm with the Raal 'in' crowd too. :icon_lol:

Getting dialed in here, near ready for visitation. Waiting for an amp stand to match the new audio rack. One more amp to try, it should be here Jan 6th.

IMO, I believe Jim and DM design the RAAL offset to the inside to minimal cabinet diffraction. So naturally, RAAL to the inside make more sense.

Wondering if we have the RAAL protrude out of the cabinet about 1/4" will help?

Interesting responses.  I actually figured they'd be OUT or depending on how much you toe in the speakers.  I was thinking being on the outside would give you more dispersion, but maybe not.  I'll try moving the speakers the other way here shortly.  Thanks for the replies so far!

Rich,
Which amp are you trying next with your SS8's?

I'm IN!  I never tried outside since Jim and others just suggested in is in.

Ernie, an old Class A Krell KSA-250. Re-capped by Krell I'm told.

I tried both ways with the HT2-TLs I use to own.  Can't say I noticed much difference.

I have tried both, but couldn't tell any difference either. I am currently running them on the outside.

I run my STRT with the RAAL facing in. Set them up initially with them out. Didn't notice a huge difference either way but like the way it looks aesthetically better with them facing in.

Mine are on the inside as well. That's what Jim has recommended, and it's the only way I have listened to them.
