Help.... Clip indicator won't turn off...
« on: 25 Dec 2013, 07:07 pm »
I need some help please....

I just turned on my system as I normally do. Heard a bit of a pop from the speakers (volume was not high at all on my B135). Then the clip light came on and a humming from the speakers.

I turned off, unplugged amp and tried it again, and STILL the clip indicator is on and the hum is  there.

I don't know what to do and am on the verge of panic that something serious has happened.

Any suggestions????

First dis-connect your good speakers and troubleshoot with cheap speakers.
Dis-connect all your interconnects at the amp's inputs and un-plug other equipment and try again.

So, as I was about to turn everything off (approaching) amp, I thought I smelled some smoky, plasticy smell from the amp (thought).. I then felt the top left grill and it felt warmer than the right side.

Turned it off, unplugged power supply, speaker cables, etc.

I reattached the speaker cables and the power supply. NOW though the red power led doesn't even come on.

Has  it been bricked?

With no cables connected, see if you have blown the main fuse located in the fuse holder below the IEC power inlet.

If it is blown, replace with same value 5mm x 20mm fuse, then try to power up with no speaker cables attached.

If it powers up try to first connect the right channel speaker cable and speaker (substituting cheap speaker is a good idea).  If that's successful try the same thing with the left channel speaker cable and speaker.

But it really does sound like service may be required.

opening/changing fuse will not void warranty?

Not if you use the proper value fuse.

Off the top of your heads, does anyone know what that would be?

Thanks.

Here's the fuse. Looks cooked. Replacing that should allow me turn on, but will it solve the clip led issue?

It's blown.  You should be able to read an amperage value on one of the end caps (#A).  You certainly could have an internal amplifier issue, but it's still also possible that you have a speaker cable / speaker issue.

Check your cables to make sure there is no short between +/- conductors or if you use bare wire that no strands were partially shorting.  There could also be a problem with one of the speakers so trying a different speaker or swapping speakers could help troubleshoot.

Always best to try one channel at a time.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help.

The fuse is a 6.3AL 250V. I think The Source (Radio Shack) carries them. I'll go pick one up tomorrow and see what happens.

I also brought up my old amp (Anthem 225) and plugged just the speaker into it. When the amp turned on there was no pop and/or hum, so I think the speaker/speaker cable is fine.

I'm really hoping that other than the fuse, there isn't anything else wrong on the insides of the B135.

I'll update tomorrow.

Thanks again to everyone.

Oi vey, what a Christmas present.  :duh:

So... put a new fuse in and now the power LED works, and the unit powers up. Once it is powered up, however, the Clip indicator LED still comes on. It is only plugged into the electrical outlet. No components or speakers are connected to it and the clip indicator is still on.

I'll be contacting Bryston to see if they can help me. :(   (Feel like getting in the car and heading out to Peterboro right now....)

I sent an e-mail to cdnser(at)bryston(dot)com  (I think that's the correct e-mail address.)

Definitely please do. I can certainly relate to what it is like to be without your audio gear when it is being repaired.

Be well...

So.............

Got my unit back yesterday. :D

All I can say is that the service and communication was great during the entire process. I even received an e-mail from the technician before  she even had a look at the unit....

Good afternoon -------,

My name is ---, I'm the technician that will be repairing your amp. I haven't looked inside yet, but reading your description of the problem I know that the outputs have blown on the left side as well as the the chip that drives the clipping indicator circuit. changing the outputs means your amp will need to burn in for a few days. I will know more on Saturday when i can open it up and take a look. I will contact you again when i have a more complete picture if you'd like.

And a quick message after it was repaired:

Your amp is repaired and will be on the burn in bench until Wednesday morning. I will give it another full check before I send it out.

It was FedEx'd yesterday and arrived the same day!

There was a slip of paper that listed the diagnosis and fix. I'll scan and post in the next day or two. Still don't know why it happened....?....

Hooked everything up last night and listened to a few things via BDP-2/BDA-2. Damn! I missed my amp.

Happy again now.
