WTB: cheap SET stereo amplifier- purchased.
« on: 25 Dec 2013, 03:15 am »
Hoping to luck out and pick up someone's DIY set amp for my new/used Omegas with Hemp drivers. My budget is low so hoping to put a little dinner money in your pocket.

Edit:Thanks- found and bought amp from fellow AC member locally

Check out MusicalParadise.ca or MiniWatt N3 on ebay. Doubt you will find DIY cheaper than that.

not sure how much you are looking to spend but I have a DIY (NOT built by me) SET using KT120 tubes ... seems to be a very solid build (large transformers - probably 25lb) but I recently purchased a Shindo Montille/Aurieges combo so this is unused

I have a matching tube preamp as well

be looking for $1000 for the pair (amp and pre) and would prefer to sell together

Music Reference sells a SET 2.5W EM7 kit for $750.  Here's a youtube vid of him talking about it:

tough to find in that price range ... a GOOD SET is somewhat $$$ to make even DIY

good luck!

Problem with SET is output transformers, and decent ones cost money. The price of the amp is going to be determined by the quality of iron. $150 could get you cheap used Chinese el84 with no name parts, or maybe salvaged console amp that requires some work.

Got it. I wanted a cheaper one as a test as I know no one local with one to try. Bummer.

look around for the musical paradise MP-301.  its a an excellent sounding SE amp, and sells new for about $350.  i have seen used ones listed recently  on ebay and other well known listing spots.  you may be able to get one at about the high end of your $ range.

good luck in your endeavor.  -andre

Actually, the Miniwatt N3 is touted as being pretty good in your price range. It might as least get you down the rabbit hole.  :)

I've got a MP 301 Mk2 (EL34 version) I bought a couple of years ago that I'm not using. I bought it to use with a bedroom system/headphones and have never used it much.

I started down a different path looking at building two bucket subs, but if I can get a SET at my price then I will redirect funds again. Thanks for advise and definitely hit me up Gene. I am most likely between a MP MK301 Mk2 and a Miniwatt N3

imho, a SET is higher priority than subs.  subs are like frosting.  SET is the heart of the system.

but all the best whichever fork you take here.

I have read a couple accounts of Omega's bass output improving with less powerful SET amps. Curious.

Non available now used and I do not have the time to build an amp these days.

I am waiting on an auction tomorrow for a MP-301 and if it goes too high I think I will buy the latest MP301 new.  Hope I am home when auction ends! My budget (this week) is about $400.
