Digital Receiver Question (Long)
« on: 7 Aug 2004, 12:12 pm »
My main system is used primarily for home theater; however it doubles as my music listening when the kids are out. I have switched to a Sony AVD-C70ES from a Denon 1800 with an Anthem MCA2. My speakers are ACI Saphire lll Le's with an ACI Emerald for center. I have a Polk Sub for movies.

I listen to jazz and acoustic music and never used the sub before. Now it seems to me the Sony has no low end in 2 channel mode. With DVD or SACD it's wonderful; however with redbook cd's I am miserable. Are ther any settings to help? Should I connect another player for cd's?

It seems to me the digital amp is more detailed and I love the one unit, but I find myself no longer listening to music.

Yep, sounds to me as a setup problem. Which connection do you use between player and receiver, digital or analogue? This determines which speaker size setting is at stake, player's or receiver's.

Cheers

I have the same receiver, and I have found that choosing "Auto Decode" with a 2CH source adds the sub channel. Choosing 2CH Only will definitely result in no output to the sub. Good Luck!

One more thing, you'll get better redbook CD playback using a separate transport with digital input to the Sony. I believe that the Sony does D>A>D on redbook software, but not on SACD and DVD. There was extensive excitement about this unit here a while back, you might search for a 24-25 page thread about it that has more detail regarding what I've said.

I agree with Jack! I've owned a couple of Sony ES receivers and they all turn the sub off if you select 2-channel for the format. Selecting Auto decode will likely put your sub back in the mix.

Enjoy,
