Squeeze Box 3
« on: 7 Dec 2013, 01:36 am »
Hi Guys:

My SB3 has died. Everything works fine except there is no audio out to the DAC. I thought it might be the DAC but I hooked up a TT with coaxial out to it and I get tunes. So the DAC is okay. Don't know what to do. I'll probably have to get a new music server. I was kind of thinking about getting a laptop and transferring my itunes library to it and use it as a music server. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are both the digital coax and the optical out not working?

That's a bummer.  I have an SB3 that has a dead left analog channel.  Apparently, that's a common op-amp failure on the SB3s.  I hooked it up to a DAC and it's been fine ever since, but I hadn't heard of too many units where the digital outs are gone.

You could get a Raspberry Pi and run Squeezeplug on it, if you have a USB DAC, or pick up a used SB somewhere.

There's also Community Squeeze, or RaspyFi.

I know Wayne of BOULDER is out of the biz, but there's a fellow here, Vinnie, of Red Wine Audio that mod SB products.
That would be my only suggestion.

Thanks Guys:

Wayne of the Bolder cable co. did extensive mods to this.  I contacted him and he is very busy trying to get his brew pub up and running by next Thursday. He said for me to ship it to him and when he gets a chance he'll take a look at it. But in the meantime I'm thinking about retiring the SB3 and getting a new server. I've been looking at Cambridge servers on audioadvisor. I'll probably go that way if I don't get anymore info. from my buds here on this site.

                                                           Thanks

This might be a good excuse to find a Touch.  I know they are tougher to find these days, but my understanding is that it is widely considered a sonic upgrade over the SB3.  The interface is awesome, and it is easy to install the Touch Toolbox for an improvement.  I love mine and can recommend it is a worthy replacement.  Good luck with getting yours fixed or finding the replacement.
