I am starting to look at upgrading my system to achieve a more satisfying musical experience but am unsure which way to go.  I am currently running a Onkyo 797 receiver, a sony 755 sacd/dvd player and soliloquy 5.0 speakers.  While the Onkyo is an excellent home theater receiver, it is not the most musical.  The speakers I am very happy with.  My question is will I get a bigger improvement out of buying an integrated amp (or separates) or by getting a new source?  Unfortunately funds do not allow me to choose both at this time.  Budget is $1500-$2000.  Also would like to mention I am seriously looking at tubes rather than SS.   Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated.

For that money, I'd get a Blue Circle CS or Naim Nait 5.

Then I'd get a TubeDAC from Scott Nixon, and a decent digital cable.  Stereovox maybe.  I think that's the best you can do in that price range, and would be startlingly close to some of the best systems I have ever heard.

What are your speakers?
