can I make my own seperate wifi + cat 5 network?
« on: 1 Dec 2013, 01:41 am »
Forgive my horrible ignorance on this subject.

I live in a house that has the internet modem and wifi router a good distance from me. Speed is decent, but nowhere near my last place.

I have a good length of cat 5 here soon, and that will be routed to my room. The cat 5 will be for my ps4, which is basically my stereo and movie player, streamer, etc.

Now the other devices I have, my tablet, my phone, Vita, those still basically rely on wifi and my signal isn't always optimal.

Would it be possible to buy my own wifi router, and run the cat 5 into that, and then cat 5 from the wifi router to my ps4, and all other devices on my now clear, close range, unobstructed wifi from the in room router?

I think what you will need is a wifi extender or bridge.  I was in a similar situation but the router died and the new one of course had n and therefore solved my problems.
Can you but the router near you and run the Ethernet back the other way or do you need wifi over there too.

Need both. Hmm, so go ahead and just run the cat 5 into the ps4, and then get a wifi extender? I'm assuming that a wifi extender is a standalone device that amplifies the incoming wifi?

Edit: think this should do

This was the unit I was considering as I had a netgear router.  I believe an extender just extends your wifi range and a bridge is actually another wifi router configured to act as an extender not another access point.  Configuring it can be tricky in my reads.

Is your present router n capable?

I always go wired when I can, though I usually go cat6.   Wireless isn't bad, but when you start talking video, wireless is too slow.  My main home theater computer can theoretically transfer up to 6 HD channels at one time, and that can be done by wired but wireless runs into a problem.

It sounds like you are looking to setup 2 wifi domains.  One exists already.  You would tie a cable for current router to new router.  New router has different password etc.  it should be possible for sure.  I have considered setting up a music only wifi in my house before, overlapping with the existing wifi.  I ended up running a switch instead, and new Cat6 wires to all the basement appliances.

Yes, you can run the CAT 5/6 and get another WiFi router and just have 2 WiFi networks.  Note that you will be double NAT'd, but that shouldn't matter to you.

I do this for a living....Here is what you need to do.
If you have a Cat V or Cat 6 running from an existing router to your location you will need to add a 5 Port Network Switch and connect that feed to it.  From the switch hard wire your PS4. This will give you a faster connection.
To set up an additional WiFi Connection you will need a Wireless Access Point, this is not a Wireless Router. Connect the Access Point to another port on the 5 Port Switch, If you are the owner of the existing Network then just give the access point the same SSID name and password as the existing wireless network and you are good to go.  If there are other existing Wireless
Access Points on the Network (not the one internal to the Wireless Router) make sure the channel number is different so there are no conflicts.
This can get complicated, if you have a friend who knows their way around a network I would get him or her involved.
Fell free to ask me questions, I will help as much as possible.

Are you saying that you have access to two networks in your house, one is available through the existing wireless and the second is available through a hard wired Ethernet connection?

If this is the case then you can simply add your own wifi router to turn the hard wired Ethernet connection into a wireless network.

You don't need to buy another switch.

Get a very conventional WiFi router / access point.  They usually come with a built in switch.

Run CAT 5/6 from the existing Access Point to the room with the PS4.  Connect the long run of CAT 5/6 to the WAN or Internet port of the new WiFi router.  Connect the PS4 to the new WiFi router.  No need for an extra switch.
