There should be a NATIONAL Vinyl Convention!
« on: 30 Nov 2013, 03:10 pm »
Was thinking about how vinyl sales have really taken off in the last few years (up 18% I read) and how popular events such as Record Store Day and Black Friday Record Store Day have become. To take sales to the next level there should be a national CES type event/convention devoted to Vinyl where the hardware manufacturers, the labels (big and small),the retailers (online and independent stores), and fans could all meet.It would definitely help the format from greater press coverage and mostly fans could DIRECTLY send their vinyl wants to those who produce the titles. In 2013 there just is no excuse to produce titles fans mostly DON'T want when there are so many fans DO want.Thoughts?

Sounds interesting. I hope you can pull it off. Where were you planning to do this and when?

Not everyone has your pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial vision. Have you thought about what you will call it? Names matter.

I'm not organizing it.Just posted it to gauge the forum's reaction and (hopefully) garner some attention from any vendors in the vinyl market (hardware and software)

Record store days promote records for the retailer.  CES is a trade show for the electronics manufacturer to show off his wares and sign up retailers.
Trade shows are expensive, using convention centers, hotel rooms, and fees to participate.

Maybe it could work as something more akin to Comicon, open to the public.  Record manufacturers could rent booths and promote their catalogue and future offerings.  New and used records could be sold at the convention.  If big enough, it might attract hardware manufacturers.  I think it would have to start on a regional level.  If it's successful it could be a good thing for audio software.  The CD is going by the wayside, but vinyl sales keep growing.

Good idea Underdog.  They could call it something like Vinylherd.

I think the best chance for something like this to work is to have it as part of one of the established regional audio shows like RMAF. The headphone guys did this with Can Jam and it has been a huge success. I've been to the last 9 RMAF's and there is a ton of vinyl there -- Acoustic Sounds, Absolute Vinyl, Elusive Disc, a la carte productions, & Music Direct. Also, there are a lot of TT, phono stages, & different cartridges in many of the rooms. You need someone to take charge, organize it and promote it. That will be the hard part--finding that someone or company to try to organize and promote the event. I think Chad Kassem might be a logical place to start to see if he has any interest.

This links shows record shows accross the nation.

Sometimes they are in hotels.  It would be cool if vinyl only set ups would set up and demonstrate their products.
