iTunes files and organisation
« on: 23 Nov 2013, 11:57 pm »
Just getting started at this and have ripped about 50 CDs so far (plus I have added a couple of hi-res downloads). I'm using iTunes to rip them to ALAC and Audirvana Plus as a player. I had moved the iTunes folder to my Time Capsule, but decided to move it back for now to the iMac's internal HD. In the process a few things have gotten odd. No biggie, but I'd like to keep this all neat and organised so that when thousands of CDs are in I won't have a mess! I will have to move the whole iTunes folder at least once or twice more when I get the appropriate hardware hooked up.

Two oddities: iTunes is set to use a library called "iTunes on iMac", but somehow INSIDE that folder another folder has appeared called iTunes Music. The last dozen or so discs I've ripped are in that inner folder, while all the rest are in the maine "iTunes on iMac" folder. I'd like to get them all back in one folder, and have that not happen again… How?

Second, just today I've noticed that the first half dozen (alphabetically) albums have lost their artwork. Any ideas how I can get back, or where it is? Is there a "rebuild index" command or something like that? I see the Album Artwork folder but it's obviously not intended for human consumption!

The best place for these kind of questions are here https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa and here http://forums.macrumors.com/
I had to do this several times, with different problems, over the years. It is best to LET ITUNES move folders and data for you.
In other words, Itunes has functions, built into "preferences", to do all these things. If following the apple discussions are not your bag of tea, go to youtube and search for a video to do this on your PC or MAC. Again, I would let Itunes do the work for you.

Good luck...

BTW I have a few thousand CD's ripped to AIFF files that I store on an EXT hard drive. That drive has to be connected to my Macbook Pro to access the files. I think I can get to it via my Airport Express (wireless), but have not had to do so.

This might help?

(See the sections on preferences and on moving the library).

Yes, those are the instructions I followed. That's why I was surprised that iTunes had created another folder inside the one I directed it to… I've corrected the extra folder issue, but still don't know what happened to the artwork.
