Paging Gary Dodd
« on: 14 Nov 2013, 10:21 pm »

Is everything ok with Gary?

I have tried all contact information (phone, pm on ac, email, dodd audio contact page) that I have unsuccessfully over couple of weeks.

Trying to get information on tubes that can be used in the unity gain preamp which currently has EH 6h30 tube.

Thx

I am not familiar with the Unity Gain Pre amp.

I have the regular Dodd Battery Preamp Gen II that uses a single 6H30 tube.  It came with the EH gold ends.  I liked it but when I upgraded on Gary's advice to the 6H30DR it was a whole new preamp.  It extends deep into the bass area and is warmer and much more musical.  That has been a fantastic upgrade to the system.  It is exspensive.  I paid $160 for it.  These are hard to find.  Worth every penny.

You're welcome.6H30DR is the best sounding tube on Dodd pre. (optimized for that tube)

Yep, aware of the 6h30dr.  Any other tubes?  What other tube models can I install in the preamp? Are 6922, 6jd8, 6n6p/6h6p, etc ok to install?

Most 9 pins 6V tube will work, don't know about the sound though.

Trung is right, the 6H30DR is pretty impressive in the Dodd Preamp.  It's strength to me is in it's low level detail retrieval and tight, deep bass.  I rolled several 6DJ8 and 6922 types in the Dodd and found the Amperex Orange Globes to be pretty darn musical and warm.  Worth a go IMO...

Thanks gents.  Time to start looking at some alternatives to the EH 6H30

same here.  Seimens 6922 are more detailed, but I think the Orange Globes have a good balance of everything done well.

We went through this a couple weeks ago... UpScale Audio has some 6h30dr's for 180.  This is the best price domestically that I have seen since Parts Connextion in Canada had them for 100 a piece 6 months ago.

As Gary's NY area Rep let me make a few suggestions. First off what output caps are in your preamp ? Mundorf ? Solen ? Duelund ? Sticking to the 6H30 tubes I recco DR with mundorf, EH [ cryo] with Solen and Siemens with Duelund. One size does not fit all. System synergy is key here.
Consider the character of the tube in relationship with the output cap installed. Have fun trying.
