Laptop output
« on: 13 Nov 2013, 05:35 pm »
I am trying to decide how powerful an USB dac I need to drive my modded Fostex RP50.  My laptop has Intel HD sound and it will drive the headphones but not as loud as I need.  Drives open back AT fine.

Does anyone know how many milliwatts Intel HD puts out?  Into what load?

Well, since it's not enough, you simply need to buy a headphone amp for it. While you're at it, you may as well get a USB DAC/amp.

Orthodynamic cans, such as the Fostex are not known for being efficient.  If you need more
dynamics or slam...you will probably need a headphone amp that will do at least one watt.
You may find that depending on your listening tastes, you can get by with 500-750mw at
50 ohms.

The T50rp are fairly hard to drive, they can go loud with a laptop or iPod but sound quality is lacking in most areas.

You don't have to spend lots of money to but a decent amp/dac. There are good sub $200 options..
