Gosh, who do you work for and do they have any openings?  :green:

But seriously, I'd be surprised if you couldn't put the Air to good use.

Sure you can.

However, if doing DSD playback with ISO file and just 32gb RAM, it could occasionally choke.

Did you mean to say 2GB RAM?

Storage may be the biggest limitation.

So you have a USB to SPDIF, and a SPDIF in DAC, so sounds like you have the hardware to support the Air.

For software, I have a macbook, and use jriver
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85106.0

You can try it, they have a 30 day trial period.

I did try some other SW, but ended up with jriver.

I think that's all you really need.

You would just need to connect the Air USB to the USB to SPDIF, and then connect that to your DAC, and you should be able to make music.

Oh. This might help:

http://www.hifizine.com/2012/06/computer-audio-on-the-mac-getting-started/

Since you have an extensive library on your NAS, you might like to just start with something like Audirvana plus. Turn off iTunes mode and just drag files in to the playlist window.

Edit: Or JRiver, didn't mean to suggest that's not a good recommendation. I've never figured out how to use it though, it's more complex than A+.

I used A+ too, and liked it.  I just like jriver better.
There are a few other choices, you link had some of the others I tried.

I was a while ago when I tried them, so I don't remember why I picked jriver any more  :duh:

I use a MacBook Air as a server.  My MBA dates back to 2010 and has only 2gigs of RAM.  All my music is stored on a 1tb WD MyBook external drive and USB is used all connections.  I've had no issues performance. I am pretty happy with iTunes for playback and have not tried any of the others.

MacBook Air running JRiver > Dac music from NAS.  Then use an iPad, Nook, Kindle or whatever else you probably already have as your remote and you're done.

I use a Mac Mini as my server and a MacBook Air to control it and surf the net as I'm doing now.   :)

Jason,

How do you connect and control with the MBA to the MM server?

Bluetooth but can also use JRemote or Gizmo.
