Anyone stoked for Thor: The Dark World?
« on: 7 Nov 2013, 05:28 am »
I freely admit to being a geek and comic book fanboy!  I'm really stoked for Thor:  The Dark World!  I think they cast Thor about as well as they could, and Thor was a book I really liked as a kid.  All of the Marvel films have been a lot of fun IMOHO. :thumb:

I don't usually see films on opening night, just not a fan of crowds, etc.  But I just might have to make an exception for this one. 8)

Stoked? Nope.  The comic book genre, like any other, can be good, bad, and in between.  Just because it is a Thor, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four, etc. isn't enough for me to head to the theater.  They are usually available via Netflix soon enough for me.

The Marvel films are starting to all have the same feel to me...I do still enjoy them, but I don't feel that excitement and anticipation like I used to.

I get more fired up for the next great indy film I'm gonna come across

I am a little bit burned out on Marvel movies at the moment. I did enjoy Iron Man 3, I am likely to go see Thor 2, but not really stoked about it.

Nope.

This is definitely one that I will wait for and ultimately view at home.

Well, just got back...and I LOVED IT! :thumb:  Maybe it's 'review-proof' to me but it had all the good parts from the first one, amped up to 11.  I'm sometimes jaded by movies but the Marvel ones take me back to being 12 years old again!  It's amazing still to me to see the stories and characters I loved for almost 40 years up on the big screen.  I liked the story lines, they gave all the most interesting characters a bit of development and screen time...and of course, they're setting up maybe my favorite Marvel story of all time for an upcoming film! 8)

Well Xmas came early for you cause I just read Marvel is looking to sign a multi-series deal with Netflix for Daredevil, Moon Knight, Luke Cage and Jewel (?). Each with their own series (and demographic it looks like). So. Yay.

Well the I brought the whole family to watch an advance screening in Aussie Land & I thought if they could have made it another 1/2 hr longer would be better.

Can you elaborate on that without giving anything important away? Like did the story feel too rushed or soemthing?

Both my girls love the Marvel movies.

We will no doubt see this one, but I'd like to know in advance if there is anything spooky in it, to either prepare them (and see it in the theatre) or decide to wait and watch it at home under more controlled circumstances.

They enjoyed Thor, The Avengers, Iron Man 1-3, Captain America - so as long as it follows the general format of those, they will be OK.

Well, yeah- there are some parts a little kid would find spooky.  The Dark Elves are kinda creepy and sinister, and there's quite a bit of actual bloodshed/killing in this one.  The penultimate showdown with Maleketh has some scary parts, too.

I was quite entertained - and my expectations were low. Dense movie with a lot going on requiring a mini movie before to set the scene. Maybe this is why joeling39 felt it could / should be longer.  But they managed to mix it up and keep it fresh and not overly serious / self-important - and I'd prefer to leave the theater maybe even wanting a bit more than feeling I'd been overserved.

I don't think Natalie Portman brought a lot to the table - but then again, I don't think she usually does.

Thanks for the kiddie specific heads up.

I think I will wait and play it in the HT.  Then we can stop and start as required.

Just got back from seeing Thor. Like Rob, I'm a bit jaded and thought it was really good. Fast paced, good story line, CGI was really good, well worth seeing :thumb:

I'm a comic book fan, I don't buy them anymore, I scratch the itch at my library.  But I haven't seen this one yet.  Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel were such disappointments that I find myself a little gun-shy at this point.  So what's the verdict?  Does Thor finally kick Superman's butt!?  (In other words, which movie's better?;)).  OK, I'm feelin' itchy, I'm off to the library!!

I think Thor was better but IMOHO Marvel just has a lot more to work with.  To me Superman is juvenile, shallow and one-dimension even by comic book standards.  However I quite liked Man of Steel.  Partly because I'm a fan of the cast; very solid with standout performances all around.  Plus I went in with very low expectations due to not much liking the main character overall.  To me it exceeded those low expectations.  Russel Crowe shined as Jor-El...heck, they could have made a better film by turning the first ten minutes into its own movie!  And I've been a fan of Henry Cavill since he appeared on The Tudors.

But I grew up reading Thor, and I don't think they could have done a much better job bringing him to the big screen. :thumb:
