Upate:  I spent a lot of time on this today, and never got any of my mics (including a nice pro mic and Centrance Micport PRo USB preamp) to work with Microsoft Impressions Screen Capture.  It breaks up like crazy!! I tried every imaginable combination of gain, resolution, bitrates, etc etc.  The software seems unstable at best.  Argh!  So I found a program that looked promising called EZVID, downloaded it late this afternoon, got playing with it, and then tonight tried a couple rough drafts.  When I finally felt like I had a decent script in my head I made a 22 minute video...which crashed as it was being, well, encoded I guess, and when EZVID came back up it was blank!!!!  It's now 11:30pm and I'm done for tonight.  :(

If anyone has a better program, or knows why my stuff crashed, lemme know.  I've done the JRiver walk thru now a couple times and feel that it's now the least of my worries.

Can you use a digital camera?

I did the video and started a new topic here.  This one should remain about Jplay, dual pcs, etc.

I'm about to give Windows Server 2012 and the Audiophile Optimizer a try!

I'm wondering how powerful the processor needs to be in my audiopc.

I have an older computer (Core 2 Duo, SATA) that I'm not currently using that could work, but is there a audible benefit in having a more modern processor (Core i5/Core i7) in the audiopc?

My old ATOM N330 Zotac board 1.6gHz runs at 12% CPU usage doing DSDx2 with Jplay 5.2 and AO.

I have a few questions  :D

I was thinking of getting/building a CAPS 3 carbon and using the dual PC mode with Jplay and Audiophile optimizer. If I understand correctly I would us my control PC (which has an Esata tower attached to it storing my music) and connect the CAPS 3 to it via ethernet and then the CAPS 3 via USB to my DAC? I use Jriver 19 BTW. So I was reading that Windows Server 2012 sounds best as far as Operating systems go but can it be used on the CAPS 3 with the SOTM USB card?

Thanks for any insight.
Tony

Yes to all your questions.  :)  WS2012 is a great OS and has a 6 month free trial that can be rearmed a few times (i.e extended).  It can be used for both pc's.  However, if you do the math you realize that the controlpc needs TWO ethernet connections...one for the external ethernet (say 192.168.x.xxx based), one for the private connection to the audiopc (say 10.xx.xx.xx based).

cool! I downloaded WS2012 today and burned the iso - after several tries to install it I figured out I didn't have enough memory on an old Athlon 64 3200+ and thats why the install kept failing.. I do realize I need 2 ethernet connections and I have that. I noticed on the SOTM page that they didn't mention support for WS2012 but I guess they need to update the page.

So, right now I have my audio pc in another room and run a 3M USB cable through the wall to my DAC. With the CAPS(since it's silent) I can put it right next to my DAC and I only need a very short USB cable from CAPS to DAC right? I already have the IUSB and Gemini dual USB cable.

thanks!!!

Yes, and Phil (AudioPhil, Optimizer) has the SOtM card with WS2012.  He can help with any driver issues.

Question about dual pc setup.  Which pc needs to be the more powerful pc?  Is it the controlpc or the audio pc?  Do I need jplay or can I use jriver on both pc?  I have a dell quad core 4 cpu server with 64GB of memory which I am planning to setup as vmware server and one of the instance was going to be a controlpc with 1cpu/4core, 8gb memory assigned to it.

thx

dual pc refers to Jplay (controlpc and audiopc are Jplay terms).  No need to do for Jriver only.

Thanks Ted.  If I were to go down the JPlay route which pc needs to be more powerful?

The audio PC does do the rendering of the sound. It needs   a 4 core processor ( 6 and 8 is overkill as JPlay AFAIK only uses 4 cores) between 2 and 3 Gig CPU power is more than enough and 4-8Gig memory. Rendering music is not CPU intensive. but too many including Josef, Marcin and others found if you underclock your CPU and memory it sounds more open and focused. Also the less power the CPU needs the better it sounds for complex reasons. I use a 2,3Ggig CPU (Intel) and it works wonders. The Audio PC will only do audio, literally nothing else, not even a monitor or keyboard, as you already know .

The power of the Control PC I would say the more the better as it frees up other things like Internet, movies games whatever you enjoy to do, Except gaming I suppose when you are seriously listening.. With the new Asio buffer you can have high end audio done by the Audio pc while looking at movies or You tube at the Control PC. BUT.. EMI and RFI and micro vibration negligible for all those functions do seriously, negatively effect the music download to the Audio PC. So the strict conditions to build the Audio PC are equally beneficial for the Control PC

The challenge or problem with PC set up in contrast with a stand alone CD player and mentioned earlier, the PC is a tweak animal, it begs to be refined and it promises to give you more heavenly sound when the rest of the set up is on par. It approximates the sensitivity of a LP turntable's arm/cartridge

My TIP would be: no music front end sounds better than JPlay mini. USe JRiver/JPlay when  (casual) listening, but JPlay Mini when the lights are out, the wife at the casino, the children at friends;)
