  • The poodle bites, the poodle chews it.
A suggestion box or perhaps wishful thinking.
I would like to see a smaller version of the 20.7; something just a few inches larger than the 3.7 but incorporating the 20.7 technology.
That way you could get "that" sound which the other models don't offer but in a more manageable package.
That would make me go speaker shopping again.

What would you guys (and gals) like to see put into production?
What would you actually purchase?

I would like to see the return of the Tympani model.  Make it push pull quasi on the base and mid and couple it with a true ribbon tweeter.  Make it bi-amp capable.

So if the proper tooling were in place to reduce the manual labor to produce one of these, can magnepan make one and sell it for about the same price as a 20.7.

I've had a chance to hear a bi-amped Tympani 1d which is not a true ribbon model and that speaker can throw a soundstage.   My 3.7 is only better in the highs but it can't matched the base or the soundstage of the tympani.

There was something very right about the separate panels.  More base but also a clarity in the mid base to mid.

A true full range panel speaker in one enclosure. Meaning flat from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. All magnetic planar or electrostatic. No need for addtional subs. Can be driven by one amp or mono blocks.

I'd like to see a company such as Magnepan make their parts more readily available to custom builders and hobbyists. Perhaps a modular version of their .7 series panels and ribbons sold through Parts Express etc.
It would be great to have more Cottage Industry builders coming up with variations of the classic Maggie designs, but unfortunately the investment in tooling for the ribbons/panels precludes this.

Of course it's just a dream, I know it will never happen

How about an easy 8 ohms and 93 dB@1W/1m?

Well, it's a start. I guess what I should have said was it would be cool to see a reasonably small full range planar that you could drive with a low powered amp. Preferably a single ended amp.

Maybe someday when the technology and materials improve.

I think Analysis Audio (apogee clones) are pretty efficient. The guy who makes the Apogee clones in Australia (Graz) also has some full range panels which are north of 90db.

Neodymium magnet open frame (like the Eminent Technology drivers) not perforated steel plates) push pull three way with separate bass panel a-la Tympani and ribbon tweeter. sensitivity in the 90's. Output into the 120s db at 6m. Please make it cost less than a house.
