Mediocre (or worse IMO) film - The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronosky, but the soundtrack is one of my favorite. Music by Clint Mansell performed by the Kronos Quartet and Mogwai.

For me, it's Conan that stands out.  Horrible movie, but the Basil Poledouris scoring is pretty memorable.

Sorcerer, & Thief - Tangerine Dream. The Sorcerer was a remake that was pretty good, Thief just ok, but the electronica of TD drove the action extremely well.

I'm a big fan of Thomas Newman's work.  He did several soundtracks (compositions) including American Beauty, Meet Joe Black, etc.

I actually found this list on-line but have not heard all of them.  The American Beauty soundtrack is very good:

•American Beauty
•Meet Joe Black
•The Green Mile
•The Horse Whisperer
•Oscar and Lucinda
•Phenomenon
•The People vs. Larry Flint
•Up Close and Personal
•Unstrung Heroes
•How to Make and American Quilt
•Little Women
•The Shawshank Redemption
•The Player
•Scent of a Women
•Fried Green Tomatoes
•The Great Outdoors
•The Lost Boys
•Jumpin' Jack Flash
•Girls Just Want to Have Fun
•Desperately Seeking Susan
•Reckless

How about an early Michael Kamen effort (definitely before he went mainstream!):

Zachariah (the western)...great music, musicians as actors, and MK even plugged his own band into the movie.  Plot a bit...thin, shall we say...but great music 8)

What about Enter the Dragon. Bruce Lee liked the Mission Impossible TV theme song so much he chose Lalo Schifrin to do the score. Also, one of the best ever, and his list is endless is not Leonard, who is a legend, but Elmer Bernstein. My favorite is Bill Conti, from Rocky fame doing Uncle Joe Shannon, the story of a down and out trumpeter with Maynard Ferguson playing the horn......Mark Korda

That is ONE awesome soundtrack and even though the movie might be a little cheesy, over the top in many parts, the ideas behind it are key of adding enjoyment to the soundtrack.

Hi J,
I wouldn't say all of those films were mediocre, but the soundtracks were good for many.  Several were Oscar nominated and I believe American Beauty won several Oscars.  The film score was great and will give your subwoofers a workout.  Strange music but I really like it.

A second for Zachariah.  They should have just done a concert film.

How about The Big Chill. A great classic rock soundtrack and the mediocrity of class reunion.

Another great one that comes to mind is the Nick Cave and Warren Ellis soundtrack to The Proposition. Not your typical symphonic John Barry-type score, but for anyone who's a fan of the Bad Seeds or Dirty Three and likes their music a bit on the gritty side, give it a try. The movie was OK, not great.

I haven't seen any of the Theo Angelopoulos films that Eleni Karaindrou did the scores for, so can't comment on the films themselves, but I really do enjoy all the soundtracks, especially Ulysses' Gaze and The Weeping Meadow.

Ryuichi Sakamoto did a nice score for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. The movie was not bad, but the title track is one that really sticks in your head way past the time you forget about the movie.
