EI 12AX7 Yugoslavia
« on: 22 Oct 2013, 01:30 pm »
I became aware of these lately. Does anybody have any realtime experience with these pre-war, EI 12AX7 tubes made in Yugo on the Telefunken machinery? How do they compare to real, German Telefunken (diamond) 12AX7s? Are these a good value? I was thinking about trying them in a phono stage... or guitar amp. Thanks.

I have no experience with 12AX7's, but I use a pair of Ei 6DJ8's and they are excellent.  They do share the characteristics of Telefunkin tubes after which they were modeled.

The Ei 12ax7's are a decent tube. Just a little on the boring side ... The Grey plates have more body but seem to be a bit slow and the bright shinny plates are more linear ( like Tele's ) ...Personally I would go with the Ge 5751 3 mica Black plates for your phono. Much better tube all around ...You will lose a touch of gain ( which was no problem for me ) .......but well worth the performance . Also consider 5751 Sylvania 3 micas ( if you can find them ) ..........Another nice 12ax7 is the Tungsram  ( Hungary ) ...Slightly sweet with great Bass and Dynamics............

Since the EI tubes were made on Telefunken machinery, everything that one might say about a Telefunken could be said about the EI. The later EI tubes were the best in my opinion. The Telefunken vacuum extractor was getting a little long in the tooth so EI decided to blueprint and rebuild it. This ultimately means less oxygen molecules that the electrons would collide with. The later tubes sounded like the older tubes but had much greater transparency.

This was the very same tube that was preferred buy Audio Research, Harmon Kardon, Jadis, , CAT, Macintosh, Fisher, and Marantz. Telefunken/ EI were the lowest distortion tubes ever made.
