My hi-fi system (incl custom-designed bits)
« on: 22 Oct 2013, 03:17 am »
While I'm a newbie to this forum, I'm not a newbie to audio/hi-fi.  I thought I'd introduce myself (although I've already posted in other circles) with some info about my custom system...

Ten years in the planning and three years in the building, my Gerroa hi-fi system is now complete, physically at least (as my wife says, the software/firmware improvements will probably go on for the rest of my life)!  In fact it has been complete since last year, but took me months to assemble and edit hundreds of video clips to make a coherent presentation!

So, for your entertainment/interest/boredom, here is a video trilogy I made about the construction and operation of the system.  Feel free to forward this to anyone else you feel might be interested.

Daniel's Hi-Fi system, Part 1 of 3 - building the cabinet (5m28s):

Daniel's Hi-Fi system, Part 2 of 3 - the working system; special features (11m42s):

Daniel's Hi-Fi system, Part 3 of 3 - the all-important Switch-Box (5m50s):

Apologies for the low video/audio quality, as elaborated in my Description on YouTube.  Don't forget you can view YouTube videos full-frame by clicking the icon in the bottom-right corner of the video frame.

Feel what you want to feel. The fact is that there is not one single person in this world that can't find someone who can do something better than them.

Well said, Charmerci, and perfectly correct.   Everyone is unique, with their own strengths and weaknesses.  What a boring world it would be if we were all the same!  :)

Welcome!
I'm 0:47 into your first video, and already I feel you need higher workbench.
You're killing your back leaning over like that.

Ok....onto the rest of the video....

(carry on)

Bob,

Thanks for your concern, and you're quite right.  But given the few woodworking projects I do (I'm an electronics engineer) it's hard to justify building a whole new workshop for it (and I don't have the space for one anyway ).  So I must be content with sharing my single-car garage with a 'standard' workbench (on the right in the video), and then using a pair of 'hop-ups' when I need to clamp both sides of a sheet for routing etc.

That hi-fi cabinet was my first woodworking project since moving to this house, and required much more routing than any project since.   When I've finished my fifth 'cabinet-making' project (hopefully just after Xmas), I don't expect to be doing any more for a decade or more, as the house will then be 'as I want it' (within its space limitations!).

Fantastic videos Daniel, just amazing. The fact you're an electronics engineer is quite evident I must say.
The remote controlled reel to reel unit is fantastic.  :thumb:
