MPAD file reading issue BPD-1
« on: 22 Oct 2013, 01:52 am »
Hi all.  New to circle, thanks in advance for any help. Having problems with metadata and file reading using MPAD to control my BDP-1 and loading cd's using XLD.

For example: in one of the first cd's I loaded, I missed that the composer came up in the artist section and each track had a different composer so there were 9 different files spread around my albums each with one song (alphabetically based on composer name).  Oddly, the correct album art came up for each one (i.e. for the right album and artist).

So I thought I'd correct the file names.  I did this by using the "get info" tab and correcting each file name to reflect artist:album:track   and than copying the corrected files to the hard drive after deleting the copies on the hard drive.  Didn't work as the same thing happened only this time each "album" had 2 songs in it!

So I decided to delete the old tracks and correct the metadata when re-loading the cd.  This sort of worked but a couple of the tracks have still come up based on the composer's name again with two copies of the same song in each file.  When I look at these files, they are named in the correct format and the metadata was correct when loaded.  There is now an album with the correct artist and all the tracks though!

In what seems to be a related vein: I have a few other albums where the titles had several additions like "remastered" or "gold edition"  in them which do not load album art from online.  When I edit the metadata on loading cd's like this they work fine and album art no problem.  Ones I've already loaded, when I go back to correct the titles by removing the added qualifiers, nothing changes.  While the filename now has "gold edition" or whatever removed, the album on MPAD still says "gold edition" in the title and I can't load the album art even though it's a common album.

Seems like, once an album is loaded with certain metadata, I can't really ever change the metadata again even if I delete the album and re-load it with the corrected metadata.  It's as if the old copy can't be erased.  Any thoughts?

Sorry for long description....

This issue is solved by deleting the incorrectly labelled music files, performing "erase empty space" in the disc utilities, and re-ripping the cd after correcting the metadata.  Clearly simply renaming or moving files to trash doesn't fool linux which seems to still "see" the original files and filenames.

Any less time consuming solutions welcome.

Ok, I was wrong and this is getting weirder.  I deleted the album from my drive ("move to trash"), used disc utility to erase free space on the drive, and re-loaded the cd with corrected disc title.

The disc is now there with the corrected title and the album art loads up from amazon.  The original incorrectly named album is still showing up as well and it still plays (including tracks I didn't include on the re-load)!  I even tried re-setting my bdp-1 to factory settings and re-loading Mpad.  How do I get rid of the originally loaded album?  Seems more than a little strange.

Martin- not sure if this is exactly your problem, but I cleared up some phantom albums in Mpad ( that were not on my HD as actual folders) by first hitting "clear cover art cache" in Settings, then refresh cover art to rebuild the cover art from scratch.  The rebuild eliminated the errors.

As far as making sure that Mpad reads files correctly, I always do this-
- all flac files per album in a single folder (name on folder is not used, but is just for your reference)
- in Settings, set Album - Group by directory (ensures that your folders control the album recognition)
- edit tags to ensure album name is identical for each flac file in album (I use Tag, select the entire group of flacs to make sure the edit is same for each
- also while editing tags make sure track numbers are correct and total # tracks, though not sure the latter is actually used.
- I dont think filenames have any bearing on Mpad as it obeys tag info.

The above works for me every time.  Note that Composer is still not (yet) used in Mpad, though many rips will try to put composer in the Artist field.

Thanks NorthMac, good tips all and not what I have been doing.

Another issue I found which is a problem with some of the albums is that when I move an album to trash using Finder in Mac OS X, I have to use "secure empty trash" command to actually delete the file.  While OS X doesn't "see" the file when it's been moved to trash, Linux on the BDP-1 does giving me the re-loaded album plus the original I thought I had deleted.  This very much confused the issue!
