Magnepan Super MMG’s vs. 1.7’s, which would you chose??

I am trying to decide if my room would better suited for the Super MMG’s (one bass panel) or the 1.7’s.

These will go into my finished basement (drywall & carpet).  The room dimensions are as follows:  The front wall is 11’-5” wide.  The length is 21’-2” long.  Room height is 7’-4”.  There is a widening of the room by 13” some 8’-3” off from the front wall.  If the speakers are placed some 4 feet off the front wall, this would only leave about 14’ to the front edge of my chair (possibly another 18” to my ears).  Additionally, if the speakers are only 18” off the side walls then they would only be 5’-4” apart (inside to inside).

So my questions are:
(1)   Is this too small a room for the 1.7’s?
(2)   Is 18” to close to a side wall (consequently is 5’4” to close together)?
(3)   Is the ceiling height to low for the 1.7’s?

I would also possibly like to add a sub or two (eg.,Rythmik 12’s?) at some future time after the maggies are broken in.

The room walls and ceiling are all drywall with the exception of two small basement type windows.

Any and all help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Alan

I'd think 1.7s would be fine in a room that size.
You could probably shove the speakers further apart without any ill effects.
They're doing it as a 30 Day Trial so give it a shot!

The 1.7's will work in that size room.  What you may run into with the maggies pushed out to the corners is deeper and sometimes exaggerated bass.  If the bass becomes boomy  you will need to place some acoustic panels on the side walls and possibly behind them.  I have a pair of 1.6's in a 17x17 room but my MMG's are in my basement about 6.5 feet between them and pushed into the corners with a low ceiling.  The bass is deeper but I had to put a bean bag chair behind each speaker to tame some of the boom created by being so close to the corners.  I am currently making some acoustic panels.

Thank you Steve and I.Greyhound Fan.

As I have a dealer in my area, I do not know if the 30 trial applies to me.  I guess I need to call and see.

I.Greyhound Fan:  Do you have a link to the panels you are making?

As to electronics, I do have a Bryston 4B ST I can use for the burn in but I need to source a permanent replacement.  I would like to keep the amps at a reasonable cost.  I know some have used Emotiva amps (no experience with these).  Another option are the Parasound Halo products.  Would it be better to have two A 23's (bridged in mono) or an A 21?  Other suggestions please.  I will be at RMAF this weekend (live 5 minutes from the Marriott) looking at amps/preamps.  Thanks

Perhaps look into AVA as well?  Their products are reasonably priced.
I'm a tube guy which doesn't always translate into reasonable cost.
The sound quality is worth it to me, though.
You'll get opinions from every possible amplifier type but tubes do it for me.

The 1.7s are going to show up whatever is downstream from them.
If you click my Systems link you can see what I'm using.  It took a few tax refunds to get it the way I wanted things but it all came together well.
The VTLs were the missing piece of the puzzle.

I would not pair an Emotiva amp with Maggies unless you will be using a tube preamp.  You may run into brightness or sibilance issues.  The same goes for the A21.  I have an A21 that I used with my 1.6's along with a Van Alstine Ultra plus hybrid tube preamp and DAC.  I went through many tube combinations to tame the sibilance and high frequency sparkle of the A21.  I just bought a used Pass Labs X250 amp and all is well.  I would consider a Van Alstine Synergy amp or a Vincent sp331 MK amp for their warmer sound.  I was able to directly compare my A21 to the Synergy 450.  I brought my A21 over to Mr. Van Alstine's studio and the Synergy was better sounding, warmer, smoother, more liquid and tube like.  Pair one of these amps with a nice tube preamp like the new AVA T-9 and you will never regret it.  Maggies and tubes are a match made in heaven.  Another amp option would be a used pair of Nuforce model 9se monoblocks.  They are tube like in sound.  There is also a guy that is selling a used Pass Labs X250 amp like mine for about $2600.  Let me know if you are interested, I can forward his email to you.  The Pass is light years ahead of any of the amps I listed and it should be since it retailed for about $6K.

As far as my acoustic panels, I am just making a frame of wood (2x2's) and covering the front with a nice fabric and then using some foam or acoustic insulation that can be bought on line or at Joanne Fabrics.  The backing will be screen material or chicken wire to hold it in place and then covered with more fabric.  A staple gun and maybe some fabric glue is all you need to keep the fabric in place.
