Suggestions for an updated Bugle manual...

Here are some minor suggestions for an updated Bugle manual.   Most suggestions are designed to benefit newcomers to electronics.  Feedback is welcome.

--  For all parts, include equivalent part numbers at another electronics supply company (e.g. Mouser) in case Digikey backorders parts (as happened in my case).

-- For customer convenience include Digikey/Mouser part number for the plastic legs, screws/nuts.

-- Include cautionary note about any parts that could be installed backwards (e.g. opamps).javascript:emoticon('')

-- Specify recommended solder brand, diameter, silver content (or, if none of this matters, say so).

-- Specify what % isopropyl alcohol to use for cleaning circuit board (or, if none of this matters, say so).  Most major drug stores carry only 70% and 91%.

And for complete ignoramous's like myself...

Indicate that the Line and Neutral leads from the mains go to which holes on the power supply board.

Also, indicate which holes are positive/negative on the preamp board.

Lastly, indicate how to ground boards and case.

All this is simple and easy for people with electronics backgrounds.  And, maybe I shouldn't be messing with this stuff since I don't know it... but, I figured it out and my Bugle sounds awesome.... It would've taken a lot less time, to complete it though if the manual just said, Line/Neutral goes to these 2 holes, and + and - go here:.... etc.

Anyway, thanks for making a great kit.

It would be nice if you added a little section regarding things to tweak (identify the crucial resisters, etc.).  Or maybe a link to your website if you wanted to do that online.

The posters all make good points, but I think it's a difficult balance to detemine how much detail to include in a manual and it really depends on who your market is. I think the fact that Jim sells the PCB "half-kit" might imply that the user should come to the kit with some experience. If his market is also meant to include the first time DIY'er then I agree the manuals would benefit from some more detail.

This being said, I just finished the Bugle Pro (pics to come) and in retrospect I appreciate the fact that the manual didn't spell everything out for me. I'd built some things before, but building the turnover and cut-off switches and the wiring called on me to rely on the schematic more than I have in the past. I learned more and it was more rewarding.

I appreciate all comments - will see what I can do to improve on Bugle manual.  Unfortunately, my strength lies in circuit design, not prose.
