woofs >= 8”.

I suspect I might prefer this combo the most. Or at least I’d like to hear some to decide.

Know of any costing < $10k?

Does anyone make paper/pulp cones anymore at all? I'd be surprised.

:dunno: That is why I am asking.

Although several speakers with soft/silk dome tweets and 7" paper woofs come to mind

Assembled:
Odyssey Lorelei
Usher X-718

Kits:
Madisound/Zaph SR71
Madisound Scanspeak Rediscovery
Madisound/Zaph ZRT Revelator Tower (2.5-way)

when you specify 8" or larger woofers, they are a lot harder to find.  Although there are 2-ways with 8" - 10" woofers, the majority of manufacturers seem to prefer the slightly smaller 7" for use in 2-way speakers.

Omega Loudspeakers use paper woofers (well, hemp pulp is very much a type of paper). Not a two-way design though.

Harbeths use a silk dome tweeter in many models, although they use a proprietary polymer mid/woofer tested to improve on paper cones.

The OP is looking for a 3 way.

Have you looked at Daedalus Audio?

rockadanny

Either a 2, 2.5 or 3 way would be fine.

No improvements necessary. Paper (likely treated/doped) only please.

Are Daedalus all paper mids and woofs?

That's what I was kind of reading into the "paper mids/woofs" part of the subject title.

I think the Scanspeak Revelator and Illuminator paper woofers are sweeeet.

I’d like to hear some to decide.

Audio Note attends just about every consumer audio show if you ever want to hear a pair of Audio Note Es . It seems like they always demo their gear with the model E speaker. You hardly ever see a model J or K, but I know that they show them every once in a while. I have heard all three models at my local audio store.

Audio Note stopped using traditional paper cones on the E and J a few years ago in favor of hemp. They were making both for a while, but I guess it didn't make sense to have two versions of the same speaker. (I don't know why the K is a different cone material.) I didn't like the looks of the blue hemp cone at first, but it has kind of grown on me. I really like my Es. When I listen to them I don't think about whether they are a two way, a three way, sealed or ported, or too close to the back wall. I don't really dissect the sound anymore, I just get sucked into the music. I know it sounds cliche to say that, but it's true. Once you set them up its hard to stop playing records.

I realize the Audio Note house sound is not for everyone, not to mention the price and pedestrian looks. I also understand why Audio Note is unpopular here at Audio Circle too, it's an easy target to make fun of. But if you ever get a chance to hear them at a show, try to sit down and relax for half an hour or so. Just listen to some music and don't look too hard at the speakers and where they are placed. You never know...... you may like what you hear.

You could try this 3 way kit:

http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/k100-monitor-1667-p.asp

The scanspeak tweeter is a silk dome. The 3" ATC mid dome is very highly regarded and also fabric [not sure of the exact composition]. The 12" ATC SB75-314 has a paper type cone [and weighs 28lbs  :o]. Passive xover included.

$US3,000 for a flat pack kit which has to be cheap since the ATC mids cost something like $600 each on their own and the Wilmslow kit is a clone of ATC's SCM100, the latest version of which sells for ~ $US18,000 with active xover

Odyssey Kismet Reference Monitor at only $3,500/pr with the custom stands included. A simple two-way, they use the high-end ScanSpeak Revelator 4531 and the new Beryllium tweeter by ScanSpeak.

Heard them, loved them, they sound like a big floorstanding speaker, don't let the beryllium tweeter scare you away.

The Salk Silk comes to mind but it only has a 7" paper cone driver and a RAAL tweeter. I like the RAAL a lot, so much so that I bought speakers that use the RAAL.

The speakers that come real close to your requirements are the brand new experimental Exotica design by Salk.

8" Seas Exotic W8 X2-08 paper cone woofer with an Alnico magnet.
Seas Exotic T35 X3-06 fabric dome tweeter with an alnico magnet.
19.25" tall, 10" wide and 13.75" deep.
37 pounds each.
90db efficient
Frequency range is 50Hz - 20kHz +/- 3db.

Both the Silks and Exotica will be at RMAF

I've been a paper cone & soft dome tweeter loudspeaker guy for a long time.  Those drivers usually have very smooth roll offs which don't require a ton of big $$ crossover parts which sucks up power & good sound.  Very nice natural sounding mids & vocals.  I will have a couple of ScanSpeak Revelator & Illuminator models at RMAF this weekend if anybody is interested in checking them out.  Thanks, Fritz

BTW- Wayne, are you going to make it to the show?

BTW- Wayne, are you going to make it to the show?

Sorry to miss your Friday Happy Hour, I'm in financial recovery mode and not able to make it this year.

The Cliffs Notes version:
June 2012 - Landlady's evil daughter evicts me
July 2012 - Move 34 years of stuff into another rental
Aug 2012 - Buy a house for cash, built in 1950, needs work
Nov 2012 - Clean house and move in
Jan 2013 - Move everything into a POD and gut house
March 2013 - Move back in with only a working toilet and shower
June 2013 - First annual thank you party for my friends who helped me will all the moving

The house is looking real sweet but trim work still has to be done. It was a very interesting year.

Paper cone midwoofers/woofers I can get behind but having owned and listened to many tweeters of the silk dome variety I must say that I find the new ceramic domes much more engaging without losing the beloved musicality of silk domes.  The Vapor Audio Aurora is one of my favorites at this point if you must have a dome tweeter designed speakers, they are just very well thought out.

I am also a big fan of Danny's XLS or XSLS designs if you must have a silk dome.  Or Fritz speakers are pretty impressive if you are not into the DIY thing.
