Who is the coolest band or musical artist?
« on: 3 Oct 2013, 04:55 pm »
Just refelecting on the band that I thought was just making cool music when I was young. Thought it might be a good topic for discussion. Never saw Pink Floyd, but for me they were making the coolest and most hip music and lyrics for the times. Also liked Led Zepplin and the Beatles. I guess the Wall was just very memorable for me.

I was a big fan of Rush in the early days 74-81 but that seemed to far apart after Permanent Waves.

The coolest band? That's easy. My former band, The Torpedoes and the Blonde Bombshells.

I guess this is a very subjective answer, and most people will probably relate to what they considered to be cool when they were growing up.

For me, some of the coolest musicians have been Les Claypool (of Primus and The Les Claypool Flying Frog Brigade), and Mike Patton (of Faith No More). These guys were not necessarily the most famous or even the most talented, but were completely fearless and experimental. And I guess that works for me. Oh, I guess Beck also falls under this category.

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

I take back everything I said before, Fullrangeman. Mere mortals they be, in front of Tiny Tim!
Thanks for introducing me to a truly unique musician!

The Beatles.
They didn't put on any airs or adopt any fake personas, they were just who they were and they changed the musical and cultural landscape without really meaning to.

I'll second Mike Patton as far as the word 'cool' goes as in he seems like the kind of guy who is always several degrees of separation away, roped off with other people you think must be really cool. He's got the voice, he's got the brains, the hot wife, the extraordinarily diverse discography including vocal effects for movies, good looking in that universal dark and handsome sense not just rock-star glow. Has money but not stupid money. Basically the kind of guy who can do anything he wants.

I totally wish I were him.

My vote goes to Pink Floyd for performing the first ever Quadraphonic Concert in May of 1967 at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Bob Dylan. Every band and artist looked up to him in the '60s, even the Beatles.

Pink Floyd

The Grateful Dead

which reminds me of a joke...

How many deadheads does it take to change a lightbulb?

None.  They'll wait for it to burn out and then follow it around for 30 years.

My favorite band growing up in the early 70s was Jethro Tull. I went to A LOT of concerts in those days, in June of 1972 I saw the Stones one week, Jethro Tull the next and Led Zeppelin the week after that and I thought Tull was in a whole different league - and the Stones and Zeppelin were pretty good in concert in 1972. Tull were not only fantastic rock musicians (led by Ian Anderson on flute) but also had the best stage presence of any band I've ever seen, incorporating humor and clever skits into their performances, pure entertainment. I have a lot of great memories from those days.

I just discovered this piece by Robert/Bob Culbertson.
To master an instrument like that, and to play so magnificently - I think that's pretty cool.

Frank Zappa
King Crimson
Miles Davis
and lots more

Those are 3 names that I have no problem agreeing with.

I would add:

Mahavishnu Orchestra (cool for the shear level of musicianship)
John Coltrane
Gentle Giant (cool for combining Medieval melodies with modern atonality)
Magama (cool for being influenced by Coltrane and 20th century composer, Carl Orff. REALLY cool for inventing their own language)

I completly agree!

Except for the "have" and "were"...they are both alive and still making incredible music!

I would also add:
Melvins (grunge before it was even a word, and long after the fad wore off)
Kid Koala - One of the most amazing turntablist of all time)

I would agree with the Beatles and JT. Also some of these other bands (videos) are indeed very cool. Like to add JJ Cale and Ry Cooder.
