Has anyone ported their existing landline to Google Voice recently? Are the instructions below still valid? If so I just need to find a T-Mobile compatible phone and I should be good to go.

I think so, Skype too. Both can be used to make calls to cell phone and landlines typically for pennies a minute.

I did it years ago.  There is plenty of information on the web to help you with the process.

There's some discussion of this issue in this thread on the Home Improvements forum.

Apparently GV can only port from a cell phone number, but some have done a two-stage port: first from land line to cell, then from cell to GV.

Edit:  Oops, sorry, it looks like GV can port from a landline now.  They didn't support that originally.

I use GV with the Obi100 and it's been great so far.

Ack!  I thought I read that on the link you posted in the first post, which I only skimmed.  Sorry about that.
