I'm not the OP but our IDs are spooky similar.  I've had my MK IV now for about three weeks.  I'm still breaking it in and getting a good feel if I like the EL34s or the KT66s better.  So far I've wanted to spend more time with the KT66s as they seem to have a better balance.  After I get a couple of hundred hours on it I'll be able to fully assess this new amp.   So far I pretty impressed.

Hi Scott,

Are you using Janszen speakers with this amp (I recognized your ID while checking your audioasylum review)?
Do you have any updates for this amp+speaker combination? I am looking for electrostats.

Thanks,
Vlad

Scott,

Congrats on you TORII MK4.  I have been eyeing/lusting after Steve's latest offering.  Looks like a great amp and reviews on the Decware forum are all very positive.

Vlad, yes I am using the Torii with the JansZen zA2.1s and the music is sublime.  Stumbling onto this amp was karma, not any overt amp shopping on my part.  A local friend of mine has the Torii III (earlier rendition) and was curious to see how it would sound on my speakers.  I was skeptical that it would drive them.  I was for years mentally in the must have mega watt SS amp mode.  Well, the Torii simply blew me away with how much better is sounded than with my big SS amp, a Sanders Magtech which is a very fine amp.  The bass output and quality was what really floored me.  I couldn't believe I was hearing this from 25 watts.

I put in an order for the amp the following day, I was that impressed.  Every Decware order is to some extent a custom build, so buyers have to wait.  While waiting for mine to be built Steve Deckert (Deckware's owner and designer) decided to upgrade the model to the now MK IV.  There were some impressive upgrades including much better caps, a new and more stable chassis, and some new voicing changes, the most significant of which now allows for a broader choice of output tubes.  People in line were grandfathered in on the MK III's price which has now gone up $500 to $3,500.  Because Decware has no marketing overhead this is a bargain.  Typical companies would be charging maybe twice this I believe.

The $3k I spent was fully realized with the JansZens.  ESLs are known for great midrange as are tube amps.  This seems like a logical fit and it really works.  The Torii's modest output is all Class A with zero negative feedback.  Every aspect of the soundstage is better.  I was pretty impressed with the JansZens when running with the Magtech.  With the Torii the JansZens are even better.  I'm hearing deeper bass and the midrange transparency is indeed about as good as it gets.  The Torii also runs as quiet as a SS amp.  I am running KT66s for the output tubes.  These have the best overall balance, at least for my ears.  The website covers all the options.

With only 25 watts the amp will give out before the speakers will, so this is not a perfect match but the amp won't start to strain until the volume is such that you have to shout over it.  It's not how many watts you have, it's what you are doing with them.   The JansZens are also a pretty easy load on the amp impedance wise.  I am running on the 8 ohm tap.
