BUC-1 reviews or comments?
« on: 18 Sep 2013, 09:16 pm »
I'm toying with the idea of either adding a PurePower component to my Audiophileo2 or just grabbing a Bryston BUC-1.  Anyone have first hand use knowledge or experience with the BUC-1?

Hi

We have not released it yet - 100 units in the Q at this point.

I have used it with my MAC Pro laptop and I think it a WINNER  :thumb:

Well, that certainly explains why there's little in the way of consumer reviews.  I'll hold off for a month or two.

Hi James,
What differences did you find when you had it connected to your MAC? I'am interested in this unit.

Everything improves from an audio standpoint - the dynamics, the space around instruments and the size of the soundstage etc.

just to be clear - the buc-1 takes usb signal from my macbook - runs it through its own electronic wizardry - then out to my dac ( moon 300d) via one of the supplied output methods - and then dac to my amp as per the norm . my 300d dad was designed with no asynchronous usb input - the buc-1 overcomes this issue correct .

Just clarifying as local dealer felt it was a dac itself  .

Correct the BUC 1 is USB DIGITAL in and AES, COAX or BNC DIGITAL out.  So you  need a DAC.

The USB input on the BUC-1 is ASYNCHRONOUS so all the clocking etc. is handled by the BUC-1 not the feed computer.  Your computer then is just a file management system and is not affecting the quality of the digital signal.

Excellent - i got the Dac , moon 300d - but version 1 from a 2-3 years ago . At that time the simaudio folk didn't feel the asynchronous usb thing was going to be a concern -- version 2 is asynchronous lol .   rather than swap i would rather go Bryston buc-1 - better on my budget and I'm sure a fantastic sound combo with the kit i presently have tied in with my mac .  and its a start for an all bryston system in 2014 !

Thanks James !

So, any comments or reviews yet? The BUC-1 is the top contender for a new convertor for me: would like to hear some opinions.

Hi

No 'official' reviews as yet as we are still catching up to our back orders and customers orders come first.

Have about 5 requests from reviewers though so should not be long.

Nice to hear you are enjoying yours :thumb:

I just plugged a buc-1 into my system. Wow!!!

What an improvement from the toslink out of my iMac! My question is what usb cable have people had success with for the best sound quality? I know it should be approx 4 ft to reduce reflections…Just wanted to commend bryston this was a major improvement for me…I felt the price was fair for the unit and I went for it. I run this into a bda-1 dac. The rest of the system is an audio research ls27 into 2 arc d400mkii's in mono to dynaudio contour s1.4.

I really enjoy the hobby and the sound keeps getting better! Thanks for your suggestions in advance….

Don't have one yet. But nothing else out there really meets my requirements at an affordable price point. I would just like to hear a few comments/comparisons before I purchase one blind.  8)

I bought one and have been listening further.  Tonite its allison krauss and paper airplane.  Not at loud volumes.  The dynamic range is much better, but the thing that jumps out at me is the space between instruments but most of all the treble air and detail.  They say my dynaudios are dark sounding but this definitely shifted my opinion a bit.  The better signal you feed them the better they get…which is not to say they're the be all end all..but certainly decent hifi with good electronics.  I went back and forth about purchasing the buc1 or the off ramp.  After hearing it ya I wonder how different it is?  The buc1 made as big or bigger an improvement in my system as switching from an arc ls15 to an arc ls27.  That's a big jump!

Hello everyone. Does the USB input on the bda-2 have all the same advantages as the buc-1?
