Storms/ Speaker Failure
« on: 13 Sep 2013, 07:47 pm »
Hi, I just read the latest Stereophile. In Stephen Mejias monthly article he tells of his year old Wharfdale 10.1 speakers  biting the dust. He thought they were damaged by a thunderstorm a few days earlier. He said quote; I came home from work to find the system entirely shut down and all the apartment's digital clocks blinking 00.00. He really does not say if he leaves his system on when he goes to work? His NAD integrated amp seemed to have not suffered any damage. Wouldn't the NAD have a protective fuse? Anyway, he never resolves the speaker issue and Wharfdale sends him a new pair. Can a lightning storm take out a pair of speakers and not harm the other components if the speakers and electronics are turned off? If they were left on, wouldn't a voltage surge take out the NAD's fuse? Like Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter, I'm so confused! He makes no mention of what really resolves the damaged speakers, can any of you?......Mark Korda....P.S. there was no mention of any external antennas which I don't think he uses anyway. Also, if this should be moved to (Critics) I would totally understand. His review while praising the Wharfdales makes me weary of any purchase from them...Mark K.

Well, lightning has a mind of it's own, but it's highly unlikely that lightning would take out passive speakers without doing visible damage to other objects and to the room itself.
A newer integrated amp very well may have a small built-in surge suppressor.  A fuse won't do much protecting from lightning (it's only a 250V fuse) but it will probably open.
