VR-35's on their way!
« on: 4 Sep 2013, 08:25 pm »
Should be here next week some time. First time buying a speaker before auditioning before hand, but feeling pretty confident I made the right choice.

Congrats on the new speakers, I've always liked VSA speakers.

Woohoo!  You'll absolutely love them.  But I'm very eager to hear how well they sound in your room.

Have fun!

Congratulations gme! I hope they work out in your room. By the way, I dig your Ayon and your CIs. What's your speaker cable? They remind me of Verbatim Ribbon SCs I used to have.

The speaker cables are the Planus II from MG Audio design. Although not inexpensive, I think they offer an incredible bang for the buck.

Cool!

These are my cables that they reminded me of back in my VR-4SR Mk1 days :) Unlike the MGs the channels are split though. My wife wasn't too crazy about how they snaked all over.

Must admit Gavin, the MGs sure look a lot neater than our Verbies do. Great idea to have one on top of the other.

The VR-35's arrived last Wed. but didn't get setup until Sun. They had around 300 hrs. already on them, and I've put another 75 on top of that.
At first they sounded kind of closed in, not very coherent, colored in the mid range, and the bass was way too prominent. Today they've really opened up, and things are starting to gel. As the bass has gotten tighter and less prominent,  I've moved them closer to the front wall. I'm now getting jaw dropping bass, that has really put a smile on my face.  :)

Kind of wondering about the imaging though. Still not getting much depth or layering. Hoping this improves with more break in and final speaker placement.

So now with over 600 plus hours, experimenting further with speaker placement, and replacing the tubes in my Ayon cd player, which I discovered were kaput, the VR-35's are really starting to sing!  I also replaced the solid stock jumpers with some silver wire jumpers I had lying around, I could not believe the dramatic improvement. A huge veil was lifted, and everything opened up and became more focused and transparent, along with tighter, punchier, and more articulate bass.

The VR-35's are the first audio product I purchased sight on heard, based solely on professional reviews and owner comments, so I was a little apprehensive at first.
That apprehension has completely vanished. The VR-35's preform beautifully with all genres of music, from classical to rock. They also sound great at low volumes, which my ears will be thankful for in the long run. Being able to place them closer to the front wall also has it's advantages. I now have more space for my workout equipment, in my audio/exercise room. Plus being able to sit closer to my equipment rack, makes it much easier to read the LED display on my cd player. I may even be able to move the 35's upstairs, into my living room, due to their ability to be placed much closer to the front wall.

I'll need to hookup my line array speakers again, before making any definitive comparisons between the two, because my recent memory of them has been tainted by the bad tubes in my cd player, which may have been what sent me on a quest for new speakers in the first place. Overall though, the VR-35's do not have the sound stage height of my line arrays, nor have I been able to coax the same sound stage depth from them, but I'm hoping this will improve by further tweaking with speaker placement. This is not to say that the sound stage height of the 35's is not adequate, in fact compared to some floor stands I've recently listened to, the sound stage height of the 35's is quite a bit taller. Overall though, in the short time I've had them, I have to say the 35's are incredible speakers, and definite keepers.

You might want to also try bi-wire cables. Most folks seem to prefer them to jumpers with VSA speakers.

I definitely want to try by-wiring them, although the manufacture of the Mg Audio speaker cables I'm presently using, does not recommend bi-wiring with his
cables. "We do not suggest bi-wiring with our cables because you will either increase the capacitance or inductance (depending on how you route them) with no appreciable upside.  We always recommend jumpers instead."
So I may have to try bi-wiring with another manufactures speaker cable, and compare it to using a jumper from MG Audio.

My previous comments regarding soundstage height and depth are out the window. I now have a wall of sound, with images projecting slightly in front of the speakers, and lots of depth behind them. I'm also hearing sounds well above the height of the speakers. It seems that my previous room treatments were not doing the VR-35's any good. The first thing to go were my bass traps, which barley made a difference with my line arrays, but soak up WAY too much deep bass with the 35's. Next I removed the side wall treatments, and those behind the speakers, and the soundstage really came to life, along with extra air and sparkle on the top end.
This is an exciting journey :D

EVERY  VS  speaker I've heard demonstrates a "3D wall of sound."   This is consistent no matter what the price point.

Enjoy your new speakers.  They will only get better with time.
