I'm surprised there isn't a thread about this.

I loved it. It's not perfect and has some loose ends in the plot, but compared to the Avengers-style tripe that seems to pass for sci-fi these days, it's a cut above.

Yeah, I didn't get the hype about the Avengers and I have no clue why it got great reviews.  Same thing with Iron Man 3.

You are spot on about Oblivion, I enjoyed it.

I'm with you John, I thought it was a fine movie. Good enough that I'll invest in the BR disc  :thumb:

I enjoyed the Avengers with my kids, but not to the extent they did.  They have rewatched it 4 times since!

I will get a copy of Oblivion, thanks for the heads up.

I agree with John about Oblivion, definitely an adult movie for people who think.  Some flaws for sure, but I thought it was worth the price of admission when I saw it in the theaters.  I would recommend it as a download or rental, I wouldn't pay for the blu ray to have in my collection until it's discounted heavily.

I liked the Avengers and thought it was very well done for the genre.  One assumes you're going to watch a comic book on the screen, and it was a good comic book.  Oblivion, Contact, Deep Impact, Gattaca, Children of Men, 2001, Blade Runner, etc. are sci fi movies, not comic books.  I put them in different categories.

I enjoyed Oblivion a lot, and I am thinking also to buy the BR copy.  Very good cinematography, and visuals.  And, for you'all vinyll heads, there a scene where Led Zeppelin is playing on vinyl for a brief moment.

i agree with you John, i thought its a great movie, where a novel idea and life perspective towards future civilisation rendered in a simple story and execution.

I also thought it was a pretty good movie and Cruise didn't suck for once.  He actually acted a little.

Not to derail but when I saw Cruise was doing Last Samurai I moaned. Then I saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Carry on.

Watched it over the weekend with my two boys and we all thought it was a solid movie.

It had a decent pace, a sometimes interesting story (including some nice twists), and enough action to keep a 9 and 12 year old engaged.

However, the plot had tons of holes in it and it was way too centered on Cruise.

I would give it 2 1/2 to 3 stars.

Glad I only paid $6 for a FIOS HD rental...that seemed about right.

I appreciated the heads up on this one, I never noticed it existed.

I watched it last night, and liked it a lot.  I happen to like Tom in certain movies (Collateral, Last Samurai to name a few), and thought he played well in this one too.

Sort of a Terminator/Mad Max Thunderdome experience.

The scenery is phenomenal, a great demo for the plasma I think.

I don't remember offhand where some of it was shot - Iceland?

I also loved the scenery and general mood set. Although it was a parade of familiar sci-fi tropes it was well executed and took me to another place for awhile. Can't say that about every movie. Tom can get a lot of flack for his personal life, but really I don't consider those things when looking at a painting, or a movie, book etc. All I care about the the work! I think he delivers a solidly Hollywood, and old school vision of the leading man, not complex, just enjoyable.

Thought the movie just fair, but I'm in love with Andrea Riseborough.

It started out really well. But it got a little tired when the scavs where simple humans without anything interesting about them, but appeared scary earlier. Like why can they only run on all fours when you don't know what they are?

Plus I feel like the pyramid might have said something a bit more, and or had a form to try and gain sympathy with? It just felt a little obvious after a bit. Maybe it wasn't the things so much as how stuff played out. The movie Moon blew me away, even when a semi predictable plot developed.

But overall I loved a lot of the aesthetic created, and some of the machines.

I got it on  Bluray and the visuals are excellent, lots of fresh scifi ideas starting to come out. I read today where Cameron saw "Gravity" and thought it was the best movie based in space ever made......it looks wild too.

I enjoyed "Oblivion" alot, fine movie! :thumb:

Not a perfect movie (acting is average IMO) but still enjoyable. It presents a competent Sci-fi story, and amazing visuals/effects.
