LampizatOr Big Six & TranspOrt
« on: 2 Sep 2013, 06:25 pm »
As many of you know, I recently sold my Level 4 DAC to a fellow forumer and purchased a Big Six and TranspOrt.   I have gotten a bunch of requests for feedback, but have generally refrained from saying too much at Lukasz' request.  He wanted me to have full system, TraspOrt AND DAC in my rig before posting.

I'll skip the flowery prose and simply state this digital stack is a friggin' monster!  I'm experiencing the biggest stage I've every had with the densest images, most percussive bass and largest dynamic swings.

My systems dynamic swings are insane and the transparency I'm experiencing, no doubt contributed to by the incredible Dueland Cast capacitors, are startling.  The presentation has a different quality then the Level 4 with everything being MUCH more resolved and well delineated in the stage.  Its more honest and less candy coated, but at the same time every bit as musical.  It took a couple days to process what I'm hearing, but I don't think I could go back now.

This is a very developed, grown up stack.  Its far from inexpensive, but I have my doubts that even doubling the budget will yield greater musical excitement.

Good job Fred you made a great move with the Lamp gear.

Tell us of the design of the transport and how it works out in your system compaired to what you were running prior to the Lamp T.

Nice speakers!

Yes, but its a bigger box than the L4. Similar size to the GM70 amp box, but has an engraved Plexiglass cover.

Here is a UK review: http://stgeorgewest.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/lampizator-big-six-dac-world-first.html

Agear,

I'm proud of my gear, but not so much my ability to stage it and take an attractive picture--at least not in my current condo.  That said, I'll see if the wife can get some better photos then what I've taken.  It always impresses me how the system profiles on Audiogon are so neat and orderly with cables tidily dealt with.  Maybe they're playing the angles game or are getting the shortest possible cables for their current configuration, but I have a rats nest, lol.

Glory,

Indeed, I think I have.  The system has been coming along very well.  I'm still loving the Zu Defs you called to give me the heads up on as well.  They have Nanotech drivers and Clarity CapMRs installed in them now.  I actually have a pair of Sistrum SP-101s I want to get under them, but my wife said *hell no* so I'm waiting till I move in October at which point I'll have a finished basement to spread my toys out in.

The Transport seems really awesome and I'm really loving what it does.  Everything has incredible depth and dimension.  Do you still miss your TranspOrt/regret selling it?

Jriggy,

Yep, but as you see from Norman's posts its deep as hell.  fortunately I have an 'open' design rack, so I could accommodate it, but it is the kind of piece that would be worth the headache of changing racks over!

Gopher, you need the trifecta.  Get the Lamp amps!  It would work with your speakers....

You're a bad man!  Lol.  They may eventually make it to my home when I move and settle down a bit, but in the form of a second system.  I am already planning to have one system in a man cave and a second one in a family area for us all as I can't just ditch the wife and kids and isolate myself.

I am very happy with my Melody Pure Black duo, but we shall see what the future brings...

An addendum I should make:  Part of the reason Lukasz wanted me to evaluate the system with the TranspOrt in place is because he made a very special transport for me which he believes to make a HUGE difference.  I did not hear the TranspOrt with the Level 4 prior to selling that, so that should be weighed into my observations.  Make no mistakes, I *love* the level 4.  Its an amazing DAC.  I'm now quite curious about how good it could get with the Transport...

Fred, You must be in music bliss. Btw, I'm curious about your Lampi Transport. Is it based on Squeezebox duet? Does it have a USB out or is it SPDIF only? It'd be interesting to hear a comparison to your previous source.

The Transport is based on the SB Duet's receiver and as such only does up to 24/48 but sounds so good, especially via ethernet that the user forgets about higher rez! Similar to the ART Legato 2.

I have never heard one, I just have a Duet with upgraded Caps and a liner PSU feed and I like that a lot. I should try it with ethernet!

There is a thread on AC documenting how you can hack a SB to process DSD.  The future is here....

I second that... I have a Bolder modded Touch running into a Modwright Oppo BDP 105.  I find most of the music I like is in standard resolution, so if something plays 16/ 44.1 MUCH better then that is worth considering.  Clearly, Gopher.. you did not feel the desire to keep your modded Touch for the possibility of playing hi-rez....

Cheers,
Ajay

Ajay,

I wanted to mate Lukasz' statement DAC with his own transport, like completing a collection.  Is the TranspOrt better then the Bolder SBT?  Yes, but it should be forthe cost difference.  The SBT is a remarkable value and I sold it to a local friend who has heard it in action in my rig many times.

Its not so much that I don't care about the hi rez future as it is I'm taking a purist approach to things as you describe.  Do whats best for one medium (redbook) and take another, separate approach for another.  When I adopt DSD it will likely be by means of Lukasz' dedicated DSD only DAC fed from an extra Macbook Pro laptop I have.

Been about 2.5 wks since I got my new "Big" Lampizator 6 and i'm really blown away. :thumb: The depth of stage is something to behold, almost like my front wall just got pushed back a good ten or so feet. Speakers completely disappear and location of voices and instruments are discernible like never before.

I honestly was happy as can be with the L4 but the new L6 just takes everything up a several notches.  Zero digital fatigue whatsoever. Highs and lows are much more extended and fleshed out. It's definitely a more resolved and articulated DAC. But MOST importantly it's a SUPER musical machine that emotionally grabs you.  :D

Didn't know you were going for one of these Berto.  Nice acquisition. I thought the Big 6 was a DSD unit.  So it is "just" a dac?
