Hi All.  Well I pulled the trigger on a Caps Zuma from Small Green Computer.  I have JRiver all set up and running.

I had my SACD collection ripped to hard drives by Tyson (thanks again Tyson).

Stupidly, I didn't carefully read through the full article on the CAPS and I'm now using 4 * 4TB USB drives for my music collection.  According to the article, one should use either eSata drives or a NAS, to free up the USBs to perform only one function - driving the DAC.

I'm using a Chord Qute, which appears to be one of those few dacs (according to the article) that does not use the 5v power from the computer's USB supply, which I can turn off on the Zuma.

Notwithstanding that, I assume that I would still benefit from taking 4 USB drives off the system, not to mention 4 switching power supplies off the mains.

So it looks like I need to bite the bullet on a NAS since I can't find any eSata drive that can deal with that kind of storage.  I cannot wire my ethernet internet line to my computer because of my house set up.  And those devices that use the AC line don't work either in my house.  So the NAS would not be connected to the internet and it would be used for the Zuma only.  I think I'll just put it in an adjoining room and run an ethernet line through the wall.

Any problems with this plan?  Would these devices suit,

After my CAPS inspired build I started using a Synology NAS and have had no problems  I compared sound to that stored on SSD within the PC and could hear no difference.  And while the Synology system works fine, I was a bit shocked when it arrived to see how little there was to it physically - just a thin plastic shell.  I suppose the money's in their software, because it installed and set up easily for me, and I am not a PC whiz.  It is also very quiet - I have it in the listening room and very seldom hear it working.

That doesn't sound very promising.

Do you have a home network of any kind? With a wireless router, etc.? If so, is your audio computer connected to this network? And if so, is it using wired or wireless networking?

There are a couple off issues that I see with trying to directly connect your NAS to your audio computer. The biggest one is that if your NAS isn't on your home network, then transferring new music to it and trying to do any type of library maintenance (doing backups, editing tags, updating artwork, etc.) may be difficult.

The typical setup would be to connect the audio computer to your home network, either through wired or wireless Ethernet. At the spot where you have your wireless router (assuming you have wireless) or network switch (if it's wired only), you'd also have your NAS. It can be connected to the router/switch using a short Ethernet patch cable.

Thanks.  I have an extra wireless router that I was going to use (wired).  So my synology would be wired (by ethernet cable) to my router, as would my CAPS, so they would have their own network - seperate from the one my wife and kids use for TV, surfing, etc.

I suppose for downloading, I could link a laptop up to the audio network via the wireless router and then download to the synology.  Otherwise, I was thinking of just using a little flash drive or other HD, and plug it into the synology as need be.

I have my eye on a Synology DS412+ now.

Why put them on a separate network? If they can be wired into the existing one, there should be plenty of bandwidth at either 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps for anything you want to do.

I can't run a cable from my main network because it is at the other end of the house, so this should work, right?

I use and love my Synology NAS that I have exclusively for my music files for my CAPS music server.  However, just tonight, I pointed my Logitech Music Server to my NAS files and now I can use it for that, too!  Great equipment, Synology.  Mine is dead silent, works every time, etc.
