I'm looking to connect an A/V receiver to a secondary video display. The main video output is to a projector, but I want to install a PC monitor as I don't want the projector bulb on if I don't have to. I've got some un-used cables running from the receiver to the area I want the monitor at, and they're three RGB/component (RG-6) and a run of S-Video. I'm not too particular on video quality since it's just menus I'll be looking at, but obviously I'd rather use the RGB.

I've been looking for an adapter that goes from RGB to DVI-D, but can't find exactly what I need. I've found >> THIS ONE <<, but the male ends need to be female. I thought about putting double female adapters on those, but I've read that this cable shouldn't be used for PC monitors. Not sure why??

I found >> THIS ONE <<, which is exactly what I need, but it says "Not for computer use".

What gives?
Any idea fellas?

Thanks!
Bob

(Note: I hate to double post, but after a week, this thread wasn't getting any views in the other forum so I brought it over here since it fits into HT as well)

They come in various lengths.  I bought a few just in case I wanted to go from a laptop to a projector.

Is this what you are looking for?  http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023503&p_id=6025&seq=1&format=1#largeimage
Yes, but that one is the same as the one I linked from BestBuy, which says they can't be used for PC monitors? The second one I linked to specifically says not to.
Ideally, I'd need the RCA to be female, since the cables that are already run are terminated in 'males', but I can get some cheap female to female adapters.

I actually use a VGA to composite from a music server (PC) to go to a TV.  It's not the sharpest resolution but good enough to let me do what I need to do as I use JRiver with JRemote on an iPad to select the music.  I'd guess what I have is something similar to this - http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-VGA-Component-YpbPr-Converter/dp/B009GUQIPG/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1377464249&sr=8-9&keywords=vga+to+component    I did have a problem with a cheaper VGA to composite that was probably more like a cable vs. the one I have.  The original one as cheap and the one I'm using was probably $70 give or take.

Hmm.....  :?
That's not very promising. I hate to spend fifty bucks on an "adaptor", especially when most of the reviews say it didn't work for them.
That two dollar unit was much more attractive.   But I hate to cause damage when they say you shouldn't use it for what I want to do.

Bob, don't know that it would cause damage.  I have a cheaper vga/composite switch and it just did not work.  I have multiple composite inputs going to a 19 inch TV via a 4 to 1 switch (and the wiring winds around to the back part of the room so that the TV is 6-7 feet from the main chair - started with cheaper monitors but they did not work out well).  Got it for DVD-A audio menus initially and then I have more than one player that needs to be set up and I had a pre/pro (which is now listed for sale) where I used the display for sale.  Then I added a front door camera.  When I got the music server, I did not want a computer monitor in the main set-up so I got the converter.  So I would say get something that has a return policy if it doesn't work just return it.  I got something like this initially -http://www.amazon.com/Lake-Converter-compatible-Windows-S-Video/dp/B00351VWKI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377465472&sr=8-3&keywords=vga+to+component+converter  and it did not do the job.  So I ended up with -  http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Resolution-Composite-S-Video-Converter/dp/B001NXDQEK/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1377465543&sr=8-31&keywords=vga+to+component+converter

OK cool. I'd be willing to buy the first one at $14 (although it's "backwards" from what I need), but if I have to spend $82 like the other one, then I'll just spend a bit more and get a nice fancy monitor that will support a cable that I already have.

Good information Phil, VERY much appreciated. Thank you.

Well....I bought THIS ONE.
For the price, I'm willing to give it a shot. If it doesn't work, I'll try the next level of units, "the little black boxes", like you linked to but if they don't work then I'll just go full boat and get a monitor that will support the other fancier cables I have in the ceiling.

I'll let you know how things work out (just for thread continuity....

Thanks Phil!

Bob - I just went the particular route I went since I had the new place I'll be in early next year wired a particular way.  It is in FL and no basement.  So in the floor where the power recliners go, I have a receptacle and in another box on the floor, speaker wire for surround speakers and a composite video connector.  This will allow me to do what I have now without wires all around and something usable to look at if I need to use the wireless keyboard and use the Windows 8 music server.

That sounds about like my current reason for doing things this way too Phil.

My PC chair is "second row, center" in my HT room. The projector is just above, and slightly forward of me when I'm at my desk. I've got all different kind of cables that have been run up there over the years to accommodate various different projectors, sources, etc....
With everything pretty much HDMI now, I've got all these other cables already run through the ceiling and coiled up above the ceiling tiles. I'll make a mount to hold an extra PC monitor to my existing projector mount, so all I have to do it look up to see what's on the video as opposed to firing up the projector and wasting lamp life.

Well....I bought THIS ONE.

I thought I'd update. In the name of 'closure' for the thread, and maybe to help save somebody else, someday.

As it turns out, it doesn't look like I'll get off as cheap as I thought I would. Since all of my sources to the AVR are HDMI, that means that HDMI MUST be the only output due to "Content Protection".  :duh:
You can't input HDMI, and then output to anything else. I guess they're afraid I'll copy all my Bluray discs onto VHS tapes and sell them, thereby bankrupting the establishment.

Back to the drawing board...........
