A/B speaker switch
« on: 16 Aug 2013, 03:19 am »
I have several pairs of speakers, but two that I really enjoy, but for different reasons and different types of music.  Idealy I'd like to set up two pairs and be able to switch between them depending upon what I was listening to.  Of course i really dont want to degrade the sound, is there a a/b switch unit that anyone can recommend.

This is the type of thing I am interested in, but have no idea if this one will degrade things

Using 2 lengths of speaker cable with double the connectors is never as good as a straight connection, but how audibly it might degrade the sound, I don't know.  However I wouldn't use a super cheapy with spring-loaded terminals and would recommend at least getting something with standard binding posts.

The Adcom GFS series is a good bet and they always seem to be available on eBay.

Researched this a bit a few years ago but changed systems and never purchased the switch.  Like you, I wanted a switch that would not degrade the sound.  At the time, the best switch(es) I came across were from Bryston.  Don't know if Bryston is still making them or not??

On the Bryston website the only model listed under Other Products > Speaker Switch Boxes is the 6 Way model, which Audio Advisor and the Bryston Limited online store sell for $1100.  It would seem that they may be no longer producing the smaller models.

I think that the 2 Way model was last priced in the ~ $500 range and I have seen a few pop up on the used market for around $200.  I didn't mention them because they are premium priced, although I don't doubt they are premium quality.

Make one.  Such a simple thing to make.

Thanks, Bryston is a little pricey, don't have the skills to make my own, so it looks like Adcom is the way to go.  So now I'm off to Ebay

I think "Niles" makes them too.
I've also seen some on the Parts-Express website

I've look at the ones at Parts Express, they sell Dayton and Pyle and all have either spring-loaded  terminals or screw-type terminals - no binding posts.

If remote control was desired, I saw one on Amazon, an OSD Audio ATM-7 7 zone with remote control and binding posts at ~ $150, but I have no idea of the quality.

But if not, I'd still try and score a used Adcom, unless by some miracle I ran into a used Bryston at a real reasonable price.

Something to be aware of - not all of the Adcom units come with binding posts, most of the ones on Ebay are designed for bare wire and will not accept anything else

I have to say just glancing at small photos it appeared than many of them did have binding posts, but closer inspection reveals round thingies that aren't .... but they are out there.  Here's one that fits the bil .....

Adcom GFS-4 with binding posts - starting bid $65 / 0 bids / 6 hours left
