I recently purchased a Music Hall mmf-2.2 and a pair of Audio Engine P4s. I run all of this through my hand me down Pioneer SX-828. I have run into an issue with the turntable and I think I have a good idea as to what the problem is but I wanted to confirm before I try to fix anything. And that is where you come in!

Issue:

When I turn on the turntable and my amp everything is fine. I place the tone arm in the "up" position by moving the lever and still everything is fine. When I touch the tone arm with my hand and move it to the left a noticeable hum in the right speaker can be heard. If I unplug the RCA cables from the amp and plug them back in then the buzz goes away. However, I have found that if I move the arm in toward the middle of the record it will begin to buzz in the right speaker at seemingly random points. Also, if there is no buzz and I am returning the arm to the cradle position it will always begin to buzz in the right speaker when the arm is just over the arm cradle.

From what I have read this most likely an issue with a ground in the cartridge, but once again I would love to hear all of your input on this matter.

It is more likely that the buzz is a bad connection at the head shell wiring to the phono cartridge than something internal in the cartridge itself. It might also be the tone arm internal wiring.

If you reverse the connections of the interconnect cables between the turntable and the preamplifeir or phono inputs on your Pioneer, does the problem change channels?
