OT Drive - Ins
« on: 15 Aug 2013, 02:13 am »

"Last time I was at a drive-in, I saw Star Wars. That was back in the 70's.
I didn't know there any more in existence near STL. "

I don't remember what I last saw at a St. Ann Drive In, other than it was a few years before Star Wars? The drive in parties of our youth, where did they go?  :D

While I voted for Matt's friend in Cadet, there's also a Drive-In in Belleville, if anyone is interested in another one around St. Louis;
https://www.facebook.com/SkyviewDriveInTheater, not sure what they're going to do for a projector?

Also, will I-Max's be going totally digital?

Belleville has already converted to digital projection from what I have been told.  Seems they have deeper pockets.

Anyone on the western side of the state should check out the Boulevard Drive In.  They converted to digital a few years ago.  Sound is carried through FM so it's pretty decent.

And, it's a cooler scene than I-70.

I was just telling my daughter last week how cool it would be if Drive-ins were still around.

Stealing my thunder, eh Bob?   :lol:

Thank you all that took the time out to vote and help save this little piece of Americana.  This is a little too late but they celebrated with a free movie night and will continue $10 carloads to celebrate.  Thanks again.  And if Doug is willing we might be able to get a GAS night going.

I've always loved this image from photographer, "O. Winston Link", called "Planes Trains Automobiles"
Thinking of Scott and Laura in the classic T-Bird at a drive-in made me think of it:

That is quite a photograph.   The steam engine is a Mallet type compound articulated, basically the pinnacle of steam locomotives.  Anybody for a game of car identification?  What brand of car are the lovebirds in the fore ground sitting in?  How many cylinders does it have?

Agreed. I am not a collector of fine art and or high quality framed prints, but if I was ever to splurge on a large framed print, it would be this one.
There's a story behind the making of that photograph (I'll see if I can find it). Obvious "Photoshop" wasn't invented back then, but Mr. O. Winston Link being the creative railway photographer he was, was able to time that image and capture it in one 'take'. Knowing that makes the image that much more special.

EDIT: Seems I stand corrected. There was a bit of cut and paste in the image with the aircraft on the screen. Everything else is genuine.
If you're interested;
- Here's the NY Times story of the image
- Here's an interactive graphic that explains a bit more
- And the title of the photo is "Hot Shot, Eastbound, Iaeger, West Virginia, 1956"
