Sherbourn/Emotiva merger
« on: 7 Aug 2013, 01:21 am »
Sherbourn is merging with Emotiva. As such it looks like they are going to be 1 company: http://www.sherbourn.com/pages/two-great-lines-are-converging

There are some sweet deals as a result of the merger. Back in March , Sherbourn announced it was going to sell direct, and all their products dropped in price, quite considerably actually. Now, with the merger, they are dropping even more. For example, the PT-7030 processor (originally $3K, then $1.8K direct, and now $999), is superior to Emotiva's UMC-200, is (?)fully balanced input to output (including 2 XLR subwoofer outputs) and is just a few hundred dollars more expensive than the Emotiva UMC-200 ($599). Sherbourn is also selling their 7 channel 150 watt/channel amp for $599 (down from $2.5K, then $1.5K direct)!

Check it out!

http://www.sherbourn.com/

Just passing the news!

Anand.

(?)= I haven't checked to see if the unit actually is designed with differential circuitry. It does have a ton of XLR outputs however...

Great deals.  If I weren't in process of a move, I'd be getting something.

However, if you look at the website closer, the only product available is the CD player.

And now that seems to be gone as well...
by the way I clicked over to the Emotiva site and I see they no longer offer their cd player, anyone know what happened?

Going fast!  From the Audiophile and Theater series, the ones that look to still be available are

PRE-1 Preamplifier

SR8100 7.1 Receiver
PT-7030 7.1 Processor
PA7-150 7 channel Amplifier

The PRE-1 preamp ($179) looks like it could be a great analog front end for a Cheap and Cheerful system, especially with powered speakers.  Two XLR inputs, one XLR output, MM/MC phono, HT Bypass, 12V trigger and machined remote.

The deals are with SHERBOURN products only apparently...

Here is a more direct link:

I see several products for sale with the above link. But items are selling quick!

I just bought the The PRE-1 preamp.  Did not need it or need to move it (probably won't even unbox it as I just bought an Odyssey preamp too for a secondary system) but at $179 including shipping with HT Bypass (and it's got to be a better preamp that some mid priced receiver I'll get for a secondary system just to drive the in ceiling surrounds and watch an occasional movie) I'll find a use for it somewhere.

And here is what is psychotic about that $179 purchase...it includes a phono preamp MM and MC - LOL!

Also, do they have an XMC-1 (SSP) for sale for over the last five years?  ...I've never seen it yet.

Anand, noticed that.  Don't have a turntable.  Did not plan to but as noted bought an Odyssey Candela preamp at the Capital Audiofest (got Synergy HiFi tubes or it on Friday and am breaking them in).  Since I was at it, everythingaudionetwork.com had a room with a stack of DACs (it is on Stereophile's site) and they were level matched, I went ahead and ordered a Teac DSD DAC I didn't need for that eventual secondary system.  Thanks for the tip :duh:  I have an old Bryston 3BST that I'll probably use with the Sherbourn preamp driving a pair of Ohm Walsh Micro Talls (they are sitting in a closet in FL where I'll be moving to) and get a cheapo receiver at accessories4less.com.  Now that I have the Odyssey preamp with a second system too, I'll probably get rid of older B&Ws I was going to use in another spare room and get a nicer pair of speakers and an amp too.  But that can wait, at least until someone posts about something that I shouldn't buy. :green:

I've not heard of Sherbourn before. But Emotiva has piqued my interest, I just haven't needed anything they've sold (yet).

I had the now discontinued Emotiva XDA-1 DAC for a bit in the secondary basement system.  I paid an introductory price for it (I think $200 or $249 forget) and it was build like a $2k DAC.  Can't really complain about the sound quality either.  Since it only would do 48k on USB and I don't use that system tons for music, I sold it.  After the Capital Audiofest where I was able to hear 5 level matched DACs in one room (not the newer Emotiva), I just ordered the Teac DSD DAC.  I've heard the Emotiva amps and they are very nice for the money.

Waiting on my PT 7030, but just got the 7 channel 150 watt amp here (shipping is fast from TN to NC). The beast weighs 66 lbs! Not bad for $599

Let's do the math:

$599/66lbs: $9 per pound

or

$599/(150 watts X 7): 57 cents per watt  :thumb:

Anand.

Sherbourn started out making really good power amps and selling them for very reasonable prices. I had a 5/1500A for 10 years and it almost pained me when I had to down-size my system earlier this year and sell it.  :(

I just saw a bunch of people buying the 350 watts x 7 model (PA7-350) for only $999!  ...On sale. ...Over at the Emotiva Lounge. ...Very true.

Well that one wasn't quite as good of a deal per pound .....

$999/98.8lbs: $10 per pound

but was an even better deal per watt   :thumb:

$999/(350 watts X 7): 41 cents per watt

Indeed. All my speakers are 93-96 dB/1 watt/1 meter with an overall 8 ohm impedance so I couldn't justify the 350 watter!
