What to do with dad's records....
« on: 2 Aug 2013, 04:23 am »
My dad was a doctor and now gone 13 years.
He loved classical music and had a good system
in his office.
We asked around and didn't find much interest in
these Vinyl sets we had left.
If I can't give them away or send them to somebody
for the cost of shipping, can I recycle these?
I hate to throw anything if it can live on as something
else.  :D
Thanks

Classical music is a tough area for old records.
Usually the best are long gone...
And what is left is hard to give away.
Generally Goodwill is happy to take old Lps. And any decent ones will be bought by collectors.
Some church charities have monthly sales.. And would accept them too.
Most likely some person will email you to ask for them.
If they will pay for shipping yeah send them away.
If  they are 78's then you should just give them away locally. classical 78s have close to zero value.
(though a few might be of value to a real collector, but those are very rare items and not likely to be in a common collection.

I have given away 6,000 Classical Lps locally when I moved. I paid from ten to fifty cents each for them, but the resale was  no one wanted them.. So I donated them to my local library sale shop.
One way to make it interesting is to list them and offer them for cost of shipping. The task of listing them may be time consuming, but you may be rewarded with new friends too.
Label, composer, and work . with Mono or stereo should be enough

Elizabeth offers good advice.  There are still folks out there, myself included, who are still interested in classical LPs & happy to take them for shipping cost, but as she mentioned, it's nice to get an idea of what & the condition.  Sadly if they're say record of the month discs in bad condition, not even us hoarders want them.  So whatever additional info you can offer would be great!

I see you're in Dallas.  I'm in Abilene.  You have a pm.

OK there are really only two collections here.
One is a Mozart collection from about 1980 that
was distributed by TimeLife and produced from
London masters. I'd say 50 discs
The other is Beethoven Bicentenial Collection
done by DG. I think there are six or seven
volumes of those.
With the exception of a couple of discs they
are all in a jacket in original boxes and the
jacketless discs have been in the boxes.
I haven't played them and they haven't been
played in a while, but they should be in good
shape.
Nobody around here (incl. Goodwill) doesn't
want old Vinyl anymore.
I've got my own collection of Vinyl so I'm not
keeping all these.
Thanks for the suggestions.
And thanks to Scott for the PM

Do you happen to have Vol XVII of the Beethoven? I have a complete set other than that one...

Isn't there an old record store around Dallas/FW that would want them?

Since no place that you could drop them off at seems to want them, you could post to Craigslist that you have some free LPs. You should get a taker in a city as large as Dallas.

In my experience when you offer something for free on Craigslist - no matter just about what it is - people come and get it right away. Even if you just say "pick it up from my doorstep". I tried to join a local "freecycle" yahoo group and there just  seemed to be so many rules and BS that I just unsubscribed. Why must some people make even charity onerous?

Half-Priced Books and Records may offer you a little for them.  When I visit Dallas I normally stop in their store on Highway 12 near the North Central Expressway.  They have a decent used classical section and lots of LP shoppers.

I've got my own collection of Vinyl so I'm not
keeping all these.

You should keep some of them if they don't take up too much space. Especially since you have the ability to play them. I have some of my Mom's old records over here, and they bring back good memories. I just file them with my own records, and they pop up when I'm searching for something to listen to. There's probably only about 30 records in all though.

Are there any lp shows or meets in your area?  Once upon a time there were in Houston.  Are there any record vendors at RMAF or other hi-fi shows?  I'm pretty sure I have some albums that I dunno about would, but certainly should be worth a hundred bucks to a serious collector.  You may, too.  In point of fact, I know of at least one AC member who does without a doubt.  Ideas are appreciated.
