Paul told me that he had too much stuff behind the speakers to use the rear wall to reinforce the bass.  Since putting the VR-35's several feet out into the room will reduce the level of the deep bass, Paul hooked up a sub to make his setup work.  We've sold almost 4,000 pairs of VR-33/35's and not a single user has needed a sub as long as they placed them up against the wall, as they were designed to be used.

Paul told me that his main thrust was to introduce his new dac/phono stage and spent most of his time talking, with the speakers playing very quietly in the background. However, he told several of our potential clients that he loved the VR-35 speakers and so he didn't bother to bring his $35,000 Infinity IRS Beta's as back up!

Happy Listening,

I was there too.  I also spoke with Paul's son who was running the room when I entered and did question him about the speaker position. He acknowledged it was not ideal but they were happy with the sonics for that room and felt it was sufficient to let them show off their new cool phono stage. That, it must be said, is a curious creature, serving to convert the phono output optionally to digital to feed their DAC, which seemed to throw some purists for a loop.  I thought the room sounded OK, but just that, and I could not consider it a great demo of the speakers, if that's what you went to hear.  This, it must be acknowledged, is not unusual at RMAF: the gear you see in the room of one manufacturer might include other stuff they own, use, or borrowed for the weekend. It may not be a representative presentation of each manufacturer.

I did a fuller write up of my experience on my blog: http://audiomatters.blogspot.com/2013/10/rmaf-2013-some-reactions.html  It's not a room by room experience or full of great pics like some marvellous reports from the guys elsewhere on AC, more an effort to put impressions in perspective.

So were the 10" woofer sections of the 35's taken completely out of the equation, or were they being augmented with a sub? Either way, I agree, the sound was not a great representation of what the 35's are capable of, and what I'm now getting in my room with them.
