BDP1 randomly stops responding
« on: 25 Jul 2013, 04:20 pm »
HI Chris,

Lately, my BDP randomly stops responding. I can't seem to pin it down to a specific situation or action, other than it being unused for a longer period. Most of the time i notice it using Mpod/pad, but in Max it won't do anything either then.

Rebooting is the only solution in these cases, but even that wouldn't go today, the BDP would not power up anymore. I had to unplug/plug the power cord for the bdp to green-up again.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Marius

Marius, is the Ethernet green light lite up on the back of the BDP-1 ?
Are your attached drives lite up as well ?

I had a similar problem but on the display it would say error 09
As it turned out it was the main board in the BDP-1 that was not responding

I had sent it back to Bryston... They replaced it and My BDP-1 today is at running 100%

HI Robert,

yep, everything appears to be functioning as it should. Had a MB-replacement before, but that was because of a another (horrible throughput) issue.
Hope not to have to change it again  :?

Thanks Marius

A guess, but most likely the MPD process crashed.  If you can shell on to the BDP you can type "ps -al |grep mpd" to see if the process is running.  You can also type "service restart mpd" to get it running again.    My issue a while back with ALAC files causing MPD to crash and sadly the /var/log permissions are a total mess on the BDP and you have to fix those permissions to even see the failure.

Within the configuration setting there is an option to enable a watchdog for the MPD, which might be Chris's resolution to your problem if you leave the MPD on all the time.

Well, don't know about you, but I didn't  :?

No response whatsoever from Bryston on this one. Starting to get the feeling Bryston is more involved in sending us all user cheers on the New Model T's than resolving these issues, fuzzy and unclear as they may be. I must confess this feels not as State of the Art, as I'd gotten accustomed to at Bryston, and combined with the other software issues in the BDP, makes me have a look at other brands ever so often. After all, there are quite some interesting audiophile Digital music options available.

And as we write this, just had to reboot the BDP to become responsive again

Sorry guys, been busy moving into my first house so I really havn't had the time to get onto the forums.  Your BDP is it locking up while files are being played back for a long period of time? Or totally idle with nothing in the playlist?

Cheers,
Chris

Is it connected to your network??  Try it off the network for a while if you can.   I had a similar problem with another media player due to a Seagate Black Armor Nas drive.  Just a thought.

Hi Chris,

Not really sure. It happened on several occasions. Couple of times I had played Internet radio.
When coming back to the Bdp,  after shutting down everything except the Bdp, the next day, it was playing in a a repetitive cycle of a second or two. Same
fragment over and over again.

In other situations the Bdp did have something in the playlist but just wasn't responding at all. Not to the Mpod/pad apps, the br2 remote
, or even the front panel buttons. A reboot did not go, it wouldn't power up again. Only un/plugging did the trick to get it back again.

Cheers
Marius

Btw congrats to your first house. Hope it will bring you what you need and will be a great Home to you!

Marius, Funny I had a similar problem. When playing Internet radio on my M/Pad...
And then selecting and album to play on bdp-1
It seems like there is some type of time out happening that freezes the bdp-1 from responding.
Result : How I have cleared my problem from happening again
Before selecting an album to play or a play list to play all I do is Clear play list ...
It removes the internet radio from the play list. So when I select an album to play or list It starts right from the top of the screen.
Since I have done so I have not experienced any type of freezing on non-responding from the bdp-1
I do not know exactly where the problem is but it works for me, as I had said above.

On another note... I do not turn off my bdp-1 ... It is on 24/7
All that I do is hit my clear play list before going to bed. It clears the directory ... the Bdp stays on with nothing on the display
Of the bdp-1. Works well for me .

Hi,
forgot to mention, it did not happen before. I feel it started some 2 or 3 firmware updates ago... Should have noted more precise, I know, sorry for that, but I thought it worth mentioning, since that should indicate a software related issue, not hardware.

And to be more precise on another detail: Mpod/mpad wont connect to the BDP in those cases. It is visible in the settings, but not reachable. Hitting the browse button gives an empty page... Have to reboot the bdp, kill the mpod app and reload it. No other order will work.

`cheers,
Marius

Hi Marius,

So if I am understanding you correctly the web interface is also unresponsive as well?  Can you bring up settings from either the web interface or front panel controls when it's frozen?  Don't worry about the revision into, I can barely keep it straight myself.

Cheers,
Chris

HI Chris,

Happened again today. Since I watched closely now, i noticed a bit more detail: A radio station was playing, since yesterday, And I wanted to load a new station. I have them saved as separate playlists, as per earlier described technique. The BDP actually loaded this new playlist, and the internet-stream seemed to work, showing some radio information. After a few seconds, the 'not connected to the server' message was shown in MPOD, and the unresponsive BDP was a fact.

Just now I tried the MAx interface with this result. before the page wouldn't load at all, this time it loaded but with an incomplete and 'undefined' result:
Hope this helps to solve the issue.
Thanks for trying...

fyi: it seems not to have anything to do with wireless bridges, of which I have a few in the house. I can walk around and connect to those on my iPhone/Ipad or laptop without an issue. Everytime the new wireless bridge is found, I (Mpod/Mpd/Max) see the BDP and can control it just fine.

Can a person stream from my bdp-1 if they log into my IP address on firefox? In which case the connection is not always stable or I'm not playing the bdp. :?
