Theta DAC vs....???
« on: 11 Feb 2003, 09:17 pm »
I've read lots and lots 'bout the newest DAC's out there that folks have posted, but was wondering if someone who has listened to something like my Theta DSPro IIIa can compare it to the likes of the ArtDiO and the like.
I've  been real happy with the Theta for years, but in losing my sound room and dissembling my gear, if I ought to give a thought to other equiptment that will fit better with my crowded lifestyle.

Obliged for any thoughts.

DF

In my experience all of the newer 24 bit dacs sound much more analog and real as compared to the older 18 and 20 bit dacs (regardless of brand). Hypothetically speaking you could surmize that this is due to more information being processed via the superior D/A chipset's resolution of 4 to 6 more bits. Regardless, I'd take a MSB or Dio anytime over the older dacs because they have to ability to trounce these dacs bigtime after they are modded, i.e. your Theta's ONLY advantage is that is may have a superior sounding gain section, which a modifier can easily emulate or improve upon with a mod to the MSB or Dio.

That's close to the answer I thought I would get.
My hifi has been dismantled for a while now, and I was getting to thinking whether I should hang onto a lot of my gear in storage or move it on and count on finding more bargains later.
Food for thought.
Thanks again,
