I will be at the Capital Audio Show
« on: 23 Jul 2013, 10:26 pm »
I am flying out on Thursday to help with both Jim Salk and Dennis Murphy set up their side by side rooms.

Both will be using AVA Fet Valve 600R amplifiers and Dennis will have full array of AVA electronics in his Philharmonic room

I hope to see some of my clients there.  It should be fun as always.

Frank Van Alstine

PS You might get a sneak preview listen to a brand new AVA product.

Have a safe flight and a great show.

Let's see. I remember awhile back Wayner commented he was listening to a proto type tube pre. I'm thinking there is a new tube preamp.

Great news. Looking forward to meeting you.

(Product intro prediction: The new HumDinger II with Litz wiring and paper-in-oil capacitors?)

Would be fantastical to think about an AVA all tube pre: full blown with all the EC capabilities, phono, remote, and a built-in DAC- a MONSTER pre !

Have a great show.

I assume an Ultravalve will be on hand and am looking forward to actually hearing it after hearing about it for so long.

Thursday afternoon I was helping Dennis Murphy move all his heavy speakers from his home to the hotel for CAF.  I got to meet Frank while we were doing that.  I've heard good things about him from Dennis, so I was interested in meeting him.

The AVA gear we unloaded were two Synergy 450 amps (one was a spare), a Fet Valve 600R amp, a Fet Valve Hybrid preamp, another prototype tube preamp, a Fet Valve Hybrid DAC, and a switch box that allows rapid A-B comparison of speakers, preamps, or amps.  As you can imagine, it took a while to get everything arranged and wired up.  The speakers we used were Dennis's Philharmonic 3, and the new Philharmonic Slim http://philharmonicaudio.com/.  There were two other speakers we carried in but didn't wire up that day.

We got to switch back and forth between the Fet Valve Hybrid and the new prototype preamps.  I kept my mouth shut, but I was glad to hear Dennis and Frank say they couldn't hear any differences.  Neither could I.

While doing this, the right channel on one of the 450 amps quit.  Dennis had brought tools, and Frank quickly found the source - a loose solder connection - and quickly soldered it.  While watching, I got a brief lecture about the advantages of multiple regulated power supplies in the Synergy amps.

I stayed and had dinner with Frank to continue talking with him, and can say I'm new fan :thumb:.  I had a great time learning just how he goes about doing listening tests of the new designs he makes.  I am impressed.

Frank, thanks for dinner and the entertainment.

I talked to Frank briefly yesterday in the Philharmonic room at the CAF and he told me that he had a new tube preamp in the works.

Frank got his picture and a thumbs up from Art Dudley on Stereophile's web site.

Regarding Art Dudley's comments, note that Jim Salk was not using a Van Alstine preamplifier or DAC, just our 600R power amp with some other DAC with gain setup.
