I have modded these units primarily to be used as transports, and they turn-out okay, but a customer asked me to do an all-out mod to make the analog outs as good as possible, so here are the results:
By golly, this thing almost deserves a Turbomod rating!
The dynamics, extension, fullness, deep soundstage and bass slam all equal the Turbomod P-3A. The only weakness is that it lacks the cymbol sheen and a little bass tightness of the P-3A. Very nice indeed. My wife is thinking about one of these for our living room. She commented that she could not imagine anyone that would not be very happy with this sound. This is one of those players that makes a much better CDP than a transport.
Here's what I did to it:
1) modded Superclock2
2) Furutech IEC
3) Vampirewire OFC/Teflon analog out connectors
4) Silver output wiring
5) power supply upgrades, including Black Gates and FRED's
6) improved power delivery to the DAC chip
7) improved power delivery to the PLL chip
8 ) new op-amps for L and R channels
9) improved power delivery for the op-amps - Black Gates and HF decoupling caps
10) improved post-DAC filter caps
Looking at dampening and Stillpoints ERS on the lid now.
If this one turned-out so good, the DVP-S777es would probably be great.
