I think the $30 Pogoplug can do it, once hacked.  Check out the Vortexbox forum or search this circle.

I am running a hacked Pogo, but using it as the player, not the server.  I believe there is a user running it as the server, which would be similar to your request?  IE hanging usb drives off it, and running the server?

I think I want something a bit more powerful with storage built in.

I figured you wanted a robust system given your consideration of the Buffalo piece.

Can a Synology or Drobo run LMS I wonder?

Synology DiskStation Manager software has a Logitech Media Server install in the Package Center.

How many drives and how much you willing to spend?

What about a vortexbox? Lightweight and don't need a beefy machine.

Otherwise build a box and throw unraid on it.

Or even Freenas......just to name a few.

I have run all of the above. Just depends on your needs/wants.

Currently I run Unraid on an HP microserver.

Impossible to answer without knowing your budget and how much storage capacity that you need. I wouldn't expect the performance of an under $300 NAS to be very good when running LMS.

I've got a Vortexbox - highly recommended as a server for the Squeezebox players. Simple, reliable, low power consumption and a good value.

There are actually two ways to do it. One is to buy an official Vortexbox from the Small Green Computer people. Those start at $429 for a 1TB drive and go up based on HD size.

The other is to find a PC on your own and install the Vortexbox operating system/software which includes LMS. It's a free download. Music servers don't need to be very powerful so you don't need a fancy or expensive computer. I bought a Foxconn barebones with 4GB of RAM for $120 (new!) and added an existing 1.5TB drive from my old music server that had died. It has no problem supporting my four Squeezebox players.

Which player do you have?  If it's a SB Touch, they are very slow running from NAS, especially when indexing the volume.  A better solution these days is a small unix "plug" computer or other tiny linux device that actually runs the server software.

He's talking about running the LMS server on the NAS, not on the Touch.

I don't understand the difference.  For example, the Synology NAS runs a Linux Kernel and runs Logitech Media Server.

Sorry, I probably wasn't being clear.  Not all NAS can run LMS.  With a "vanilla" NAS, you can still use SB touch, but the Touch handles all the work -- slowly!  Pretty much the same thing as plugging a USB drive directly into the Touch.

Ah, it seems like I need to doors research. I have a low level Synology DS211j. Is it easy to transfer files to a vortexbox? Think a Raspberry Pi only running LMS would work? I have one of those.

I'd use in order of preference:

Synology (setup to have LMS installed, and has enough power to run it properly, even with high res files)
Drobo

Did you install and try running Logitech Media Server on your Synology DS211J and found that it didn't work well?  You can monitor CPU and RAM usage with the Resource Monitor.

I need to try this tonight.  I was going off information gathered on the web that it was not suitable.  I think I may just build a Zuma and be done with it.  Run both jRiver for the main rig and LMS off it.  I am so confused with my Squeezebox secession plan.  I want to do high quality USB to my DAC but I also want sync’d whole house.

sts9fan, did you try LMS on the Synology?  I just ordered a Synology 213+ NAS and 2 WD 2TB Red drives and want to use them with LMS to stream to my Touch and my SB3.  What version of LMS is optimized for Synology?  I see there is a version for Netgear ReadyNas but not Synology.  I understand there is a version on the Synology website, but which version of LMS is recommended for a Synology NAS?  Does anyone know?

The version of LMS for the Synology NAS will be available within the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM).  After logging on to DSM through a web browser, first go to Control Panel > DSM Update to check if you are running the latest OS version, and if not, update it.

Then go to the Package Center and under the All or Multimedia tabs scroll to the Logitech Media Server and install it.

The Synology DSM OS has a pretty low overhead, so even with the smaller units that have a slower CPU and less RAM, you should be able to sucessfully run LMS and support a few Squeezebox devices, as long as you aren't also using the NAS as an FTP Server, HTTP Server or Mail Server, running other applications, or have a large number of logged on clients that would limit available resources.
