Streaming YouTube
« on: 14 Jul 2013, 07:16 pm »
Hi, I'm totally new to DAC's. This question has probably been asked before. Will a Firefly, Schiit, HRT, or Halidie make music sound any better from You Tube on your main stereo rig,or is You Tube mostly for the visual thing?......thanks, Mark Korda

*Almost all sort of audio processes that your computer DAC will do in order for you to hear the audio portion of Youtube will benefit via an external USB DAC.

* I say almost because there will be some video files that are encoded in different audio formats that SOME USB DACs will bypass.  BUT, all youtube stuff, all USB DACs will decode and play.

My screen name is 1 of the 7 names that people who used to use AOL were able to have.  I got it off from my older bro...  We no longer use AOL....jijijijj, but the screen name remains.  Bem=good in Portuguese. Opti=optimal and then add 1, 2 and 3.  That was his idea.

Paul from NYC.*

Compared to what? What would be decoding the audio otherwise in your setup? If it's the cheap onboard audio of most motherboards, using an external DAC will almost certainly be an upgrade. The $99 Schiit DAC is probably worth trying.

FWIW, the highest audio quality available with YouTube videos is 192 kbps AAC. Passable, but not the greatest quality source.

And to get this highest audio quality you have to select the highest video quality.  As the video resolution goes up, in most cases the audio resolution does as well.

When you play a YouTube video, the video resolution is either defaulted to a lower setting or to Auto which usually gives a lower setting than the maximum available.  It depends on the video, but video resolutions may be available from 144p to 1080p.

So go down to the gear icon on the control toolbar and select the highest possible video resolution for the best possible sound.

Between the wonderful librarys of Youtoob, Pandora and Spotify playing through my ultra-cheapo PC speakers, I almost never listen through my main rig anymore.

That's a damned shame. I often listen to MOG through my main system.
