new guy from Michigan
« on: 5 Jul 2013, 03:08 am »
Hello! Another "new guy" here, near Detroit. I've been a music and gear enthusiast since I was a kid but have only gotten back into "hi-fi" as I have gotten older. I listen to mostly to classical, opera, and Jazz and my system is a mixture of stuff.

I've been browsing some other audio forums for some years, but this is my first venture into AC. Nice place here!

Welcome Don,

For years, I used to spend a lot of time at other audio forums but since I've discovered this place, I hardly venture to those forums anymore.  Look around the different circles and get comfortable.

Cheers,

Welcome Don.

I live about one hour northwest of Detroit and have been into stereo/audio for 40+ years.  Not enough of us in Michigan.  Is there still a southeast Michigan audio group (they used to gather occasional at each other's homes to listen/discuss (I attended a couple of times years ago).  Of course there's the AK gang.  I missed not having the AKfest this year.

I listen to jazz/classical with a variety of pop (mostly 50s/60s).

What's your gear/room look like?

Greetings Don.  I think you'll like it here.  I'm originally from the Detroit area; have lived all over Michigan (including the UP) and have ended up in the Boyne City area.  Like JLM I've been into audio for 40+ years.  I too was disappointed there wasn't an AKFest this year, but maybe next year?!

I enjoy listening to classical and mostly pop and rock (70-80's).

Hi Don,
Welcome to AC.  Not many here from MI but most are on the east side.  I'm in the SW corner.  Enjoy AC.

Thanks for the warm welcome, gang!

There is the SMAC (Southeast Mich. Audio Club) group, some of whom do have a presence on AK. I usually try to go the meets (I probably make about half of them) and have hosted twice in the past few years. I also missed not having the AKFest this spring, so I went to AXPONA in Chicago. I thought it was good and I might go again next year. I've never been to RMAF, but it's on the list ...

My system is modest: Vandersteen speakers, Bryston amp, McIntosh pre, and various sources.

Hello Don et al.,

I too am from the Detroit area but moved a little further out about a year and a half ago very near to where JLM explained he was.  I still travel downtown to see the Red Wings play and work between Detroit and Ann Arbor.

I recently joined and was looking for a Michigan audio group and was surprised not to see one.  Maybe this will provide a good opportunity to create one.

SMAC you know about.  HEMI is for home theater junkies.  They are all over the southern portion of MI along the 94 corridor.  I still have the banner:

Unfortunately I moved to Kzoo so out of the real action.  I'm gonna stir it up here on the west side and see what we can muster.

The advantage of AC is a world view you can apply locally.  Sometimes AK can be focused on the older gear or local trends.  They have a massive membership though.  I am sure we have been to the same SMAC GTG's before.  There are a few folks in your area and fellow SMAC'rs who post here.

I want to send out a big thank you to JLM.  Because of our proximity he was gracious enough to invite me over to listen to his gear.  I appreciated it greatly.  JLM is a good and knowledgeable person.  I enjoyed listening to his transmission line speakers, it was the first time I have had such an opportunity, as well as gleaning some of his audio knowledge.

Thank you.

I would be interested in finding out more about the Southeast Michigan Audio Club or any other that is in our region.  I have only been to a single event and it was steered more toward home theater.  Unfortunately I do not know the name of the group.

Always fun to visit with audio neighbors.  I too would like a link to the SMAC.  I think it's the same group I attended a couple of times several years ago, but the guy running it that was sort of administering things seemed to have dropped off.
