filling speaker cabinets

Hey guys,
I am considering making my cabinets out of bending plywood two or three layers thick..or more. It occurred to me that I could instead of laminating the plys together I cold have them spaced out a little and fill them with sand or foam or something. I have been using expanding foam for filling door jambs and stuff and decided that it could possibly have some deadening qualities. Aside from being easy to fill the small voids between plys it is lightweight and very adhesive as well. Im sure sorbothane would be good too but too expensive. Does anyone have experience or know of some cabinet makers out there that are doing something similar?
thanks, beat
