VMPS 626R testing and possible upgrade...
« on: 29 Jun 2013, 12:56 am »
I have received calls or e-mails for years asking for assistance with VMPS related speaker issues. But I have been turning the business away as I was asked by the Audio Circle owner not to design any more upgrades for products of companies that are here on Audio Circle. However, VMPS have closed the doors. And since then I have starting receiving more calls and e-mails asking for assistance with their speakers in one way or another. And since they are no longer in business I will be assisting these customers as best I can.

I have another VMPS 626R that was sent to me. This is a newer one with the nice cabinets, mega woofer, and so called wave guide. I'll be letting you guys know very soon what can be done with these. Problems are numerous but fixable. I'll post some measured data and analysis shortly. Then I may follow that up with an effective upgrade.

Stay tuned and let me know if you have any questions.

Danny,
Does the VMPS 626R you are testing have the circular planar tweeter or the FST ribbon tweeter?

Aurium Cantus ribbon tweeter.

Ok, then they are like the 626R kits I have from long ago.  That original crossover upgrade you did sounded very good with them!   :thumb:

This one uses a different woofer. The baffle width is slightly wider (I think) and this one has a thicker cabinet. They didn't radius the back side of the 1" thick baffle behind the woofer or mid though and it looks like it is having some effect on the response of the mid. You'd never know it with the stock crossover though. Those effects are hidden in the deep nulls of out of phase driver cancellations and peaks.

I am a VMPS RM-1(modded) owner and I would truly welcome and love to have some positive and helpful discussion regarding this brand. My experiences with the deceased owner of VMPS were not what I had hoped for. I am hoping that you handle these future discussions with great professionalism. The rolling eyed emoticon you chose right out of the gate is disappointing but rectifiable. I love my imperfect speakers and I want this thread to flourish.

Yeah, me too, but I really want this thread to not go there.

The eye roll was that I can't believe all of these phase cancellations and nulls.... It had no reference to anyone in particular.

Okay, I have put these things through the ringer and have come up with solutions. I also designed a new network that solves numerous problems. Please bare with me and I will explain and post measured data so that it will be easy to understand. And when I say that there are problems it is because there are real problems that can be seen, understood, and corrected. It is not to bash the design, company, or former owner. Please leave issues with VMPS or the former owner out of the discussion. I intend for this to be technical in nature. And I intend to help those that have asked for help and others that may own these speakers and would like to make something of them.

I have a set of 626Rs (ribbon tweeter, mega woof, black hole cabinter damping & such) that I purchased in 2011. They were one of the last sets of MLS cabinets as I was told. I'm interested in any upgrades that are available for them. Any updates?

Please go to Home Theater Shack and see my post regarding Danny's 626 revision. You will find it in the GR Research forum. There is no comparison to stock. Diamonds vs. Coal.

In your opinion, which is worth $0 to me.
There are many different speakers designs, why?, because different people like different things.

Lin, I don't believe you have read all of Danny's posts regarding this modification. My opinion, of value to you for the amount paid for it, is still valid. This may not be rocket science, but it is science, and you can't refute the measurements. This isn't a different speaker design, or even a bad design. It is an abomination. Like many, I paid a lot of money for a product that was grossly misrepresented. I am still trying to hold my anger in check.

Sound is only somewhat objective. The engineer has parameters that he wants to record, but in the end if it sounds like crap it probably is. It would take about 5 seconds, maybe less, to tell the difference here.

I know it is hard for some people to accept the fact that sometimes things can go awfully wrong. In this case, it is kind of irrefutable. I intend no ill will here, just another audiophile trying to help out my friends on this forum.

I am not certain as to what your real point is either, but if you are trying to infer that if it is better or not after the mod is a matter of opinion, or that some will still like one while some will like the other, then you probably are not aware of the magnitude of the change. You might want to read threw the information fro the posted link.

I never listened to them but the MLS RM30 was one of the best looking speakers ever. I'm not sure if the wave guide was a good idea but it looked bad a$$
