Any strategies on how to network a Teac UD-501?
« on: 27 Jun 2013, 09:08 pm »
Thinking of getting one of these so I thought I'd ask.
My first thought was a headless mac mini but if there are other options, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks in advance.

The TEAC is not a network player.  It is simply a stand-alone DAC.  There is no network involved, and no network connections available; just hooking a digital cable from a transpor, or a  USB cable from PC/MAC to the unit.  All local, sorry.

Headless is the way to go for me.  PC running Windows Server 2k8R2, but I am looking at Windows Server 2012.

As Ted says, no other way to go.    Run preferably wired Ethernet to that location to the PC/MAC of your choice.

I think, as an OS, that Windows Server 2012 (GUI edition) is a wonderfully musical one.  JRiver and Jplay (single pc to start, then dual pc to max it out).  Jremote ipad browsing.

This is what I was considering.
Doing everything on the mac side.

I have a Mac mini, JRiver and JRemote
I can run the mac mini USB to Teac.
The mini is wirelessly connected to my network and to my hard drive that contains all my files.
JRiver serves.
JRemote controls from iPad and/or Screen Sharing Controls from my main mac.
Mac mini delivers via USB to the Teac.

If I get into trouble I can access the mini through my main mac with Screen Sharing or with one of the many VPNs available for the iPad.

What do you think?
Thanks

I would not do wireless access to music or Mini.  Wired only.  Wireless (rf, noise and limited bandwidth) has no place in a good music server environment (except for wireless iPad to router/LAN).

Ok.
So running an Ethernet cable to the mini would work well?
I was trying to avoid that but for the love of art I guess I can sacrifice :-)

Hi Ted
Just had a thought.
Do you think the Lumin Network Music Player is a compromise do to it being networked.

Thanks

Network is not a compromise.  And no...but it's a SEVEN TIMES the cost compared to your Teac ($5490 vs $799).   :o  At that price we can talk about MANY great DACS and a Windows server combo.

Wow - I did not realized it was that expensive.
I definitely cannot get into that price range.

So will an ethernet cable suffice for me, considering my measly capital?

Silly me.
I don't need and ethernet cable at all.
I'll just put the external drive with all my files next to the mac mini :-)
Thanks

If you're going to remote control the mac mini from another device, you'll need some way to connect to it, won't you?

That doesn't remove the need to wire up the Mini to the LAN.

I'm Sorry Ted, that went over my head.
Why do I need to connect the mini to LAN?

The External Drive will be hardwired to the Mini.
The Mini will have JRiver installed and will be hardwired to the Teac.
The mini has wifi so I can control JRiver with JRemote.

What am I missing?
Thanks

Nothing, really.  While it's more common to communicate wirelessly with a Mac through a separate wireless router, you can create a network on your Mac and it becomes the router.  Many do this on their Macbooks and switch to that network when traveling to be able to use smartphone remote apps without an external router.

I'm with Ted on this one.  I think the hardwired Ethernet has much less potential for noise/interference.

Steve.

That's what I was thinking.
I just tested both methods and they both work well.

Thanks

Look at my device chain.
Everything will be hardwired from my files to the Teac.

The only thing that is wireless is the controller.

The mini itself will be transmitting to the network via wifi

I still don't get it.
How does "transmitting to the network via wifi" negatively affect a hardwired device chain?

In any case how am I going to use the controller without wifi ???

Thanks
