Vintage to new- transformations
« on: 26 Jun 2013, 12:01 am »
Several years ago I took two old Eico HF12 integrated mono amps to Gary Dodd with the instructions,  "Make them in to something better".  The result was the beginning of the circuitry that he used in his battery powered 6QB5 amps, and a really musical sound with fantastic imaging.

So now I took a Knight Kit KB-85 from the earliest days of stereo to him with the instructions, upgrade the jacks, put in a power cord connection, and do whatever else strikes your fancy.  I should have known that a simply upgrade wouldn't interest him.  Now this is actually a well thought of and somewhat collectable amp... now it's something beyond that.
The pictures came today...

Before (mine had 6L6 GC's)

After:

I'm eager to hear what the old girl sounds like now.

Any other transformations out there at AC???

I have a pair of Heathkit W5m. They look stock on top but they've been extensively updated and modded.
They sound great. :)

I was always curious about the Heathkit sound back when I was buying Eico and Knight stuff, but the right unit never came up when I had the $.  Those W5m amps used to appear on ebay regularly- not so much anymore as the prices for all those amps with good iron have really shot up.

Thanks Trung.  If you get by Gary's you'll probably hear it before I do.  If you do, let me know what you think.

Your Knight  certainly has been given the deluxe treatment. :thumb:

One more thing I'd like to upgrade on the Heathkits are the power cords. Maybe I'll do some cap rolling too. :)

The pair of Eico's that Gary redid for me are very sensitive to power cord changes and really responded well to a Wywires pc.  The same pc on my Moscode 401hr did not have near the same impact.  I'd be curious to read what you think about changing PC on your Heathkit.
