SOLD SOLD SOLD For Sale: Linkwitz Lab Orion 3.1

$3250 OBO.

This is a pair of Linkwitz Labs Orion speakers, version 3.3.1, functionally excellent and cosmetically very good with a few caveats/exceptions.

Note that just the drivers in these speakers cost $2400 from Madisound - thats buying the whole set which gives a discount.

The amp retails for $2500, sells for about $1800 new it seems, and is easily worth $1200 used. Also note that it sounds excellent. (Since the amp is not driving any passive xovers, only limited-band, easy loads, certainly many factors that can make amps sound bad - such as back EMF due to wild impedance & phase angles - are not present. The amp IMO has ZERO harshness or fatigue with these speakers. Indeed, there is a SET-like realism and immediacy to the whole system.)

I have the Wood Artistry shipping cartons, which cost $575 alone, and a very sturdy custom box with large foam inserts for the amp (it's quite heavy - about 70 lb).

Even at the new price of around $8000 when they were built (the current version, the 4, which is only slightly different, is now sold finished new for $14,750), they are a bargain. At this price, sonically, they are a steal. They are entirely full-range and have a way of unravelling complex music that is nearly unparalleled.

The baffles are sturdy and well-built, and decently finished. They look very slick & gorgeous (I think) from a few feet away. But, these are DIY speakers, and do look it. There are some minor imperfections in the finish.

When shipped to me, one of the midrange driver supports broke off cleanly at the bass, as the drivers were not secured to the baffles. I epoxied the base back on and it's really good as new, and you can hardly tell by looking, either. I will be sure to well-secure the midrange drivers so this can't happen again.

Cosmetically, the weak link is the ASP (the crossover/signal processor), which is in a rather flimsy case and has a large area (more than a square inch) of missing paint on the face. Best to keep it hidden. :) Also, the subsonic filter switches do not work. These switches could be replaced for a few dollers and a bit of soldering if needed.

A set of el-cheapo RatShack speaker cables, tied together in a harness, is included. These speakers really challenged my audio subjectivism because they sounded quite excellent with these cables. Please note that you can get a full set (four cables) of 7' speaker cables from Blue Jeans with their ultrasonically welded bananas for about $130.

With four boxes, three of them large & heavy, shipping will not be cheap. I paid about $400 from NY to WI. I will split shipping at my asking price only!

Local pickup would also be quite welcome. They are no longer setup for demo, however.

Tempting, very tempting.

They were so tempting I bought 'em, for more than this. :)  Some things they do have almost no peer.  Too complex and need a bit too much space for me though (3 little kids).

Bump for very well designed speakers.  I've only heard these once in a large room and, even though I wasn't a fan of the music choices, the speakers were world class.
